Marvel’s Spider-Man – Silver Lining DLC review

Silver Lining is the third chapter of The City That Never Sleeps DLC series for Marvel’s Spider-Man. It completes the story which began in The Heist and continued in Turf Wars. Having enjoyed the first two chapters I was really keen to see how events concluded in this final chapter.

Like in the two previous DLC’s the Silver Lining content is activated in-game via the touchpad and DLC menu. This switches the game to a different instance of New York City that focuses solely on the DLC content. You don’t need to have completed the main game to access it and can switch back whenever you like.

Marvel’s Spider-Man – Silver Lining continues the focus on Hammerhead as the villain. This time Spider-Man can’t count on the help of New York Police Chief Yuri Watanabe as she has been placed on administrative leave following her recent behaviour.

There’s a new main character in this chapter as Silver Sable makes her return and attempts to reclaim her stolen Sable International tech. She’s also gunning for Hammerhead but not keen on the idea of working with Spider-Man. Instead she sees him as a rival which makes co-operating with her very difficult. A highlight of their interactions is the fantastic banter which is often hilarious.

Insomniac have really saved the best for last with this DLC and the story elements are the strongest yet. There are some fantastic cutscenes to move the story along and a nice variety of missions that will keep you busy for an hour or two. The final boss battle was one of the best yet and really entertaining.

How quickly you get through this chapter will really depend on how good you are at the combat. There are some huge brawls to overcome with almost too many enemies to take care of. You really need to rely on all of Spider-Man’s skills and gadgets to succeed. I’d also recommend changing Spidey suits and swapping out their abilities to match each fight. If you don’t you’re probably going to be in for a frustrating time.

In addition to the story, Silver Lining features season three of Screwball’s challenges. One complaint I had with Turf Wars was that there was no collectible challenges on offer. This time that’s been fixed with 9 recordings to track down. There are also new crimes and upgraded Hammerhead bases to discover and take down.

Like the previous chapter, this one comes with three new Spidey suits – Aaron Aikman Armor Suit, Cyborg Spider-Man Suit and Into the Spider-Verse suit inspired by the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse animated film.

Overall I really enjoyed the conclusion to The City That Never Sleeps and would recommend it to every fan of the game. As well as the main story a few other plots are moved along. If this is indeed the last DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man then I can’t wait for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
