The Little Acre is a point-and-click adventure developed by Pewter Games. Curve Digital are handling publishing and Charles Cecil (Broken Sword) is on board as Executive Producer. For our preview we were able to play through the first parts of the game.
Set in 1950’s Ireland, The Little Acre follows the story of a guy named Aiden and his young daughter Lily. They live together in a small house with Aiden’s father Arthur and their dog Dougal. However Arthur has mysteriously disappeared and no-one seems to know where he’s gone.
The game begins with the family asleep and you need to help Aiden get up and dressed without waking Lily or Dougal. Doing so is a fun series of simple puzzles that will make any parent smile.

Once out of bed, with Lily still fast asleep, you need to help Aiden investigate the disappearance of his father. Arthur is something of a mad inventor and there are several of his contraptions around the house. His study holds the most clues and the arrival of a strange package sets Aiden on the right course.
The puzzles are classic point-and-click adventure style where you need to work out how to use items in your inventory with those found in the surrounding environment. Solving them isn’t always obvious but there isn’t anything too obtuse. If you do get stuck there is also an in-game hint system to help you along.
As Aiden follows the clues to his father he eventually ends up in a strange world. Back home Lily wakes up and your playtime is then split between the two characters. Lily is cute, mischievous and a lot of fun to play. Dougal keeps watch over her and tries to keep her safe. After an eventful breakfast she decides to help find her grandfather and now missing father too.

Graphically the game looks stunning with a wonderful cartoon aesthetic and hand-drawn animation. A neat feature is how the game moves between a traditional point-and-click 2D viewpoint to an isometric view. Also the music is lovely and the voice-acting is excellent.
It’s a promising start for The Little Acre and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the first part of the game. If the developers can keep the same level of quality throughout I think they might have a winner on their hands.
The Little Acre is coming to PC (Steam), Xbox One and PS4 on December 13th and is available to pre-order now for £9.99.
