Gato Roboto preview

I’m just as excited to talk about Gato Roboto as I’m sure developer doinksoft is to have made it! Floating in space with your human owner, there comes a distress signal from an abandoned laboratory on a nearby planet. Doing the right thing, your human steers the ship you’re on toward it–things go a bit hairy and end in a crash landing! But…you’re not in the ship anymore? And your human is stuck in there? And….you’re a cat!?

Gato Roboto puts you in the paws of Kiki the cat, and you are your human Gary’s only hope for survival (as he’s very much stuck inside the ship). Time to explore for any solution–the alien planet is littered with obstacles and dangers that seemingly only our feline heroine can traverse!

If you played Minit, the monochrome 8-bit graphics aren’t going to be too much of a distant memory for you. Echoes of ZX Spectrum games like Head over Heels, Wizball and Jet Set Willy come to mind here! Perfectly executed with style, Gato Roboto makes use of the black and white on screen to paint a vivid picture of a treacherous environment. It works really well with the platforming you’ll be meant to do, which is also well done, simple and very responsive.

Kiki can run around as is, or with the help of a mechsuit, giving various powers that simply being a cat won’t allow. Alternating between states will surely help solve platforming puzzles–something I quite enjoy! The levels are set up to be very Metroid-flavoured, even with the save/powerup points and bubble doors lending to the aesthetic. There’s going to be some interesting bosses lined up too–making me flashback to some tricky Mega Man fights.

It’s going to be wacky, cute and challenging ride–look out for Gato Roboto coming soon! I hope this is the game that spawns a million fan art pieces as I’m already loving Kiki in any form to bits!

EF Games will have a full Gato Roboto review around release in late Spring 2019. Check out the official Steam page for more information or to add the game to your wishlist.
