Alien: Isolation
After the dreadful Aliens Colonial Marines we were starting to wonder if we’d ever get another decent Aliens game. Thankfully The Creative Assembly and SEGA stepped up to the mark with this entry into the survival horror genre. Set 15 years after the events of Alien, players stepped into the shoes of Ripley’s daughter Ellen.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
With an extra year in development and a future setting this year’s Call of Duty from Sledgehammer Games has given the series a new lease of life. There’s a brilliant single-player campaign featuring Kevin Spacey and a fresh take on the multiplayer game. We’ll be playing this one for a while.
Dark Souls II
From Software managed to hook gamers in 2011 with the first Dark Souls game. Featuring a punishing difficulty that would normally turn players away it became a badge of honour that players felt compelled to conquer. The sequel brings more of the same with some new changes and is simply unmissable.
Destiny
Bungie selling the rights to their beloved Halo franchise came as a big surprise but the ambition of their next title was not. Destiny merges the MMO and FPS genres in new ways resulting in an addictive online-shooter that we can’t stop going back to.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Now in the hands of 343 Industries the Halo franchise is getting ready for the return of the Master Chief in Halo 5. Before then Xbox One gamers are in for a treat with this remastered collection of the first four Halo games on a single disc. It’s one of the most generous offerings we’ve ever seen an absolutely essential for any Halo fan.
Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
The mighty World of Warcraft spawned a new game this year which tackled the Collectible Card Game genre. Hearthstone can be played on PC or tablet and is an incredibly addictive title.
Mario Kart 8
Mario Kart finally came to Wii U earlier this year with HD graphics running at 60fps. A new anti-gravity feature makes way for some of the craziest tracks the series has ever seen. There’s also 12 player online multiplayer.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Games based around films and books never seen to turn out all that great. Instead Warner Bros and Monolith have come up with a game set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth and it’s one of the surprise hits of the year. The game features brutal combat and a brilliant nemesis system.
Titanfall
Respawn Entertainment breathed new life into the FPS genre with Titanfall. Putting players in the role of pilots of giant mechs and adding wonderful parkour-style movement. Summoning your Titan down from space never gets old. Essential for any shooter fan.
Watch_Dogs
After missing the launch of the Xbox One and PS4 Ubisoft’s ambitious game became one of the most anticipated of the year. Players took the role of Aiden Pearce who was able to use his elite hacking skills to control the technology of Chicago.
World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor
Now in it’s tenth year Blizzard have silenced their critics once more with an incredible expansion. Player numbers had been slowly creeping down but Warlords of Draenor has seen them skyrocket once more. Featuring possibly the best content Blizzard has ever created along with a new player controlled garrison it’s clear that World of Warcraft isn’t going anywhere.
