Kingdom Come: Deliverance documentary explores the real swordfighting behind the game

We’ve all heard of many Asian martial arts but it’s safe to say that not many of us are familiar with the martial arts of Europe from the medieval era. Not so for the guys at Warhorse Studios the creators of the amazing Kingdom Come Deliverance. The game prides itself not only in delivering an outstanding open world to explore with gripping story lines throughout but also keeping things as real as possible.

This realism is most prevalent in the combat of Kingdom Come Deliverance. The game forces you to think about every move you make. You need to learn to read your opponent’s moves and plan your counter accordingly to seek the one advantage that makes  the difference from your head leaving your shoulders or theirs.

In medieval times masters of the martial arts would teach their skills via a Fechtbuch which is essentially an instruction manual of how to fight in particular style. Each master would have their own Fechtbuch and combining the knowledge within with dedicated practice new masters were forged.

To coincide with the release of the Band of Bastards DLC, Warhorse Studios have released an hour long documentary “Fechtbuch: The Real Sword Fighting Behind Kingdom Come Deliverance” The documentary Fechtbuch is a record of what the developers learned in pursuit of achieving combat realness and a guide to some of the secrets of historical martial arts. Leading Czech and Slovak fencers cooperated with Warhorse Studios to create an outstanding fighting experience.
