Game of Thrones 6×09 Battle of the Bastards preview

Game of Thrones season 6 continued with its eighth episode, No One (read our recap).

If you’re not up to date on the Game of Thrones TV show and like to avoid spoilers (you have been warned) we suggest you don’t read any further. Below is information we’ve taken from the episode 8 preview trailer as well as speculation about what we think might happen.

The ninth episode is written by showrunners David Benioff & D. B. Weiss with Miguel Sapochnik in the director’s chair for the first time this season. The episode is expected to be titled Battle of the Bastards which is an obvious reference to the showdown between the armies of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon). We’re expecting that the bulk of the episode will be devoted to the battle. The synopsis is:

Terms of surrender are rejected and accepted.

The trailer opens up with Jon Snow on horseback as he’s heard to say ‘Battles have been won against greater odds, I’ve fought beyond the wall against worst than Ramsay Bolton’, to which Sansa (Sophie Turner) replies ‘You don’t know him’.

Next up is a shot of Ser Davos (Liam Cunningham) stood alone at what could well be the remains of the pyre where Shireen Baratheon was burnt alive. We’re guessing he finally learns the truth of what happened.

As the armies of Bolton and Snow line up, Jon Snow is heard to say to Melisandre ‘If I fall, don’t bring me back’.

Next we see a shot of a smiling Ramsay and a determined looking Jon. Jon is heard to say ‘Thousands of men don’t need to die, only one of us’. Presumably he’s offering Ramsay a one one one fight but it doesn’t look like that will happen.

The next shot shows the Wildlings, including Tormund and their Giant, charging forward. Next is a screaming Ser Davos as he draws his sword.

As some of Jon’s army charges forward on horseback, the Bolton army archers unleash a volley of arrows.

There’s a quick shot of Sansa (Sophie Turner), the Wildling giant smashing Bolton soldiers, brutal hand to hand combat and a bloodied Davos.

At the end of the trailer the Boltons appear to have the Wildlings surrounded as they close in with large shields and spears, before a final shot of Jon Snow.

Game of Thrones season 6 continues at 2am (simulcast with the US) and 9pm Mondays on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
