Reuniting writer/director Christopher McQuarrie with the world’s biggest movie star Tom Cruise, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is a staggering blend of entertainment that delivers on every count. This, the sixth chapter in the Mission franchise could be forgiven for falling a little flat, but that’s simply not the case here. It’s an outstanding ode to blockbuster cinema and proves yet again that Tom Cruise is box-office gold.

I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it yet again. Tom Cruise is simply the very best at what he does. No-one delivers blockbuster entertainment like he has done over the years and his consistency over such a long period of time should be lauded much more than it is. Tom Cruise is sensational in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and somehow manages to up the stakes yet again to deliver a film that contains incredible stunts and sheer white-knuckle entertainment that will leave you shaking in your cinema seat.
Mission Impossible is known for its bold stunts and Tom Cruise has taken this to whole new levels of authenticity and audacity in Fallout. I won’t go into too much detail for spoilers but there’s a big halo jump that just leaves your jaw firmly on the ground, numerous metal-twisting car chases, a helicopter sequence that gives you altitude sickness (in the best possible way) and city sequences in Paris and London that gets the heart racing.
But it’s not all about the stunts. Many films would have rested on those laurels but not Mission Impossible and not Tom Cruise. He, along with writer/director Christopher McQuarrie has seen to it that every aspect of Fallout is meticulously crafted. The story constantly keeps you glued to the edge of your seat; there are plenty of wow moments, some awesome surprises and characterisation that engages the audience fully. Humour is also expertly placed throughout and frequently provides a nice balance between the chaos and the calm.
The plot finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his crew Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames) trying to recover some plutonium that will be used to create nuclear bombs for a anarchist terrorist organisation named The Apostles. Their leader (Sean Harris) is already in custody thanks to Hunt, but he still has a role to play in this game, as does Ethan’s old friend Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson).
To divulge more would be to rob you of one of the best action experiences you’ll ever get in a cinema. Henry Cavill takes a break from his duties as Superman to play August Walker, a government agent tasked with keeping an eye on Ethan’s mission. He does exceptionally well here, bouncing off Cruise’s performance to deliver one of his career-best performances to date – including a fight sequence in a restroom that is equal parts hilarious and bone-crunching.
The rest of the cast are as great as you’d expect too, with Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Angela Basset and the scene-stealing Alec Baldwin all excellent in their roles. Michelle Monaghan returns to keep the bigger story arc going nicely and Sean Harris can play a good bad guy in his sleep. Vanessa Kirby is spritely as the White Widow, a criminal broker who works with Ethan and Rebecca Ferguson is once again mesmerizing as Ilsa. She also has a fight scene alongside Simon Pegg and a motorcycle chase sequence with Tom Cruise that are both sensational.
I often speak about the wonders of IMAX and quite frankly, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is the perfect example of why this format is the future of cinema. The clarity and scale of this film in IMAX is staggering. From a breathtaking halo jump to a helicopter dogfight, the experience of watching Mission Impossible in IMAX is unparalleled and one that has to be experienced. If you are going to see Fallout and you can stretch to it, you certainly won’t be disappointed.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout is simply what big budget cinema should be all about – a willingness to deliver something truly breathtaking and exciting, whilst giving the characters and story just as much consideration. Roll on Mission Impossible 7 – I hope this franchise never ends if it can stay as fresh and exhilarating as chapter 6.
