Colossal review

Every once in awhile, a Sci-Fi movie comes along that completely reaffirms your faith in not only the genre, but cinema in general. Colossal is that film – a delightfully off-beat story that’s full of startlingly original spectacle that defies logic, whilst delivering a dark and delightful tale laced with genuine comedy and emotion.

Anne Hathaway plays Gloria, an alcoholic who moves back home to her parents empty house as she struggles to sort her life out. She’s just been dumped by her long-suffering boyfriend Tim (Dan Stevens) and her career has faltered. On arrival back home, she inadvertently reconnects with an old classmate named Oscar (Jason Sudeikis) and takes up a job in his bar. Not the ideal place for an alcoholic to work, but she could use the money and the distraction.

Elsewhere, in Seoul; South Korea, sightings of a mysterious and giant monster leaves the world gripped in fear. What makes matters worse is Gloria feels that she is connected to this extraordinary phenomenon. As she investigates this further, it leads to an old playground and a staggering revelation that will change her life forever.

It’s safe to say Colossal is the best work Anne Hathaway has done in years. She leads the line exceptionally well, especially given how unpredictable the narrative is. She plays well across all of the emotions demanded from her; such is the clever and concise script. Jason Sudeikis is excellent and at times acts very much against type to deliver a very memorable supporting turn. Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell and Tim Blake Nelson lend great support too and create a solid dynamic for the human interest story to shine through.

Writer/Director Nacho Vigalondo has produced a film that will linger long in the soul, plays with convention and has in abundance that rarest commodity – genuine originality. I would love to have seen how this film was pitched to studios, because hand on heart, it’s breathtakingly unique in its implementation and intentions. I can’t go into further detail because it will ruin the surprises. Going in cold is an experience you will cherish. Long may this level of creatively run wild in the world of science-fiction filmmaking .
