Avengers: Infinity War IMAX review

The wait is finally over for the superhero showdown of the century. Avengers: Infinity War isn’t just another superhero movie; it’s a culmination of a decade’s worth of interwoven storytelling. It’s hugely significant of where Marvel Studios are at the moment and crucially, where it will take its characters going forward. With heralded and hyped blockbusters there’s a tendency to be let down but Avengers: Infinity War proves that with the right minds behind the scenes and the right talent in front, you can craft an engaging, heartfelt, thrilling and utterly absorbing movie that resonates long after the end credits roll.

Unpredictability is the key ingredient in Avengers: Infinity War and it’s that unpredictability that clearly shows you why this studio sits head and shoulders above its competition, and why it produces gem after gem that stands the test of time. There’s thought and reasoning put into every frame of Infinity War, each serving the next with a stunning verve and foresight that furthers the story whilst entertaining at every given opportunity.

This review is spoiler-free so I won’t go into great depth with the plot. The story picks up after the events of Captain America: Civil War with the Avengers now split up. Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok also set up Avengers: Infinity War with crucial plot-points, so if you are looking to rewatch any big stories in preparation for Infinity War, revisit those films.

Thanos (Josh Brolin) is on a mission to capture all of the infinity stones in order to reign supreme across the universe, and in doing so end life as we know it. This forces Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) to address the situation in New York as Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Guardians of the Galaxy deal with events in space. The rest of Earth’s mightiest heroes come together to take down Thanos in a fight that will shake up the very fabric of existence.

The cast is massive for this film and pretty much everyone gets their moment to shine. Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dave Bautista, Don Cheadle, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Karen Gillan, Mark Ruffalo, Paul Bettany, Pom Klementieff, Sebastian Stan, Zoe Saldana, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bradley Cooper, Benedict Wong , Benicio Del Toro and Tom Holland are all present and accounted for, with some great surprises along the way. For me personally, Chris Hemsworth shines the brightest and is given a great chance to really show what the God of Thunder can do.

A cast this big could have been eclipsed by the grandeur of the moment but kudos to writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who deliver a screenplay full of emotion, humour and vigour to really place you in the action, and give you a very real sense of the danger that these characters face. The Russo Brothers have proved time and again that they are masters of their craft. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo have delivered a hugely impressive film that showcases their keen eye for spectacle and action.

IMAX is the format of choice for this film and the spectacle delivers a truly breathtaking experience. Whether it be in 2D or 3D, Avengers: Infinity War is what big scale cinema is all about. Witnessing this epic on an IMAX screen is simply outstanding so I urge you all to see it in as big a screen as you can find. The clarity and depth of picture in IMAX gives the film even more substance and provides an unparalleled movie-going experience that you won’t forget. Avengers: Infinity War lends itself to repeat viewings so do yourselves a real favour and see it again in IMAX if you haven’t already done so.

Very much The Empire Strike Back of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War is a bold and ambitious statement of intent that frequently leaves you breathless. There’s so much to discover here, with layers of subtext and build-up that will go on to define Marvel’s most ambitious phase yet. And stay until the very end of the credits. There’s only one sting but it’s perhaps the most important post-credit scene Marvel has ever produced. For those who know what it means, it will provide a real sense of excitement for the events that are to come. It’s going to be a very long wait for the next Avengers movie to land in April 2019.
