Production on the eagerly awaited Top Gun sequel Top Gun: Maverick has started and lead star Tom Cruise has teased fans by sharing the first picture.
Through his social media accounts, Cruise posted a picture that shows him in character as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. decked out in his distinctive uniform with a fighter plane in the background. Cruise’s back is to the camera but the picture features the caption ‘Feel the need.’ which is a nod to the original movie.
Not a great deal is known about the plot yet but Variety reports that Maverick is now ‘a flight instructor and that the film would explore a world of drone technology, fifth-generation fighters and the end of the era of dog-fighting.’
Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) is directing the film and the screenplay was written by Eric Warren Singer (Only the Brave), Peter Craig (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay) and Justin Marks (The Jungle Book).
The film studio is Paramount Pictures, as with the original movie, and it is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer for Jerry Bruckheimer Films and David Ellison for Skydance. Cruise is a producer on the movie as well as the star.
The original Top Gun movie was released in 1986 and went on to gross almost $357 million worldwide at the box office. It starred Cruise alongside Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Tom Skerritt and Anthony Edwards.
The film was directed by the late Tony Scott, who committed suicide in 2012 and was believed to have been working with Cruise on the sequel.
You can expect Top Gun: Maverick to arrive in cinemas on 12th July 2019 in the US with a UK date to be confirmed.
