The Death of Superman heads to Digital in July & Blu-ray/DVD in August

One of the most iconic Superman comic book stories of all time; The Death of Superman is heading to Home Entertainment platforms as an animated movie this Summer.

Haven’t they already done that? Well, yes… but as the inaugural film in the DC Universe Movies series, Superman Doomsday (which was released back in 2007) told an abridged version of The Death Of Superman storyline. That film was quite short – around 74 minutes – and as a result a lot of the comic book storyline was cut, instead focusing on the battle between The Man of Steel and Doomsday.

This new animated movie – The Death of Superman – marks the first chapter of a two-part film experience that will conclude with Reign of the Supermen. That storyline followed on from the death and funeral of Superman in the comic books and introduced the world to a series of new Supermen, each with their own unique powers.

Reign of the Supermen is due out in early 2019, and will restore many of the moments and characters that fans want to see in this epic storyline.

The film is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment, and will arrive on Digital Download on 24th July and on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD on the 6th August 2018.

The Death of Superman will also be released in a special Limited Edition Blu-ray set including a Graphic Novel along with a Limited Edition Blu-ray Steelbook and Limited Edition Blu-ray/Mini-figure combi-pack on 6th August.

DC Comics’ landmark 1992-93 comic phenomenon made the global news back in the day. Whilst heroes come and go in the modern era, this was one of the first monumental storylines to get covered worldwide. People queued up for hours to get their hands on a coveted issue of Superman #75 – the legendary issue where Superman and Doomsday fight to the death.

Most recently, this storyline was incorporated into Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Rushing through the plot-points and not giving the storyline its due respect, it was a massive mess. You can read more about what worked and what didn’t in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice here. The Death of Superman animated film looks to put most of this right once again to finally give fans the movie that the source material deserves.

The Man of Steel meets his ultimate match when Doomsday comes to Earth – hell bent on destroying everything and everyone in his path, including the Justice League. The Death of Superman ultimately finds Superman in a fight to the finish when the Man of Steel becomes the only hero who can stand in the way of the monstrous creature Doomsday and his unstoppable rampage of destruction.

An impressive all-star cast is assembled for The Death of Superman led by Jerry O’Connell (Superman), Rebecca Romijn (Lois Lane) and Rainn Wilson (Lex Luthor). They are joined by the DC Universe Movies’ returning voices of the Justice League: Jason O’Mara (Batman), Rosario Dawson (Wonder Woman), Shemar Moore (Cyborg), Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern/Hal Jordan) and Christopher Gorham (The Flash).
