The BFG
What’s it about? The beloved tale of a little orphan girl who is whisked away into the land of giants for the adventure of a lifetime. Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the classic children’s novel by Roald Dahl. This is such a perfect combination of source material and filmmaker, I think we can all afford to be a little excited for this. Adding to the pedigree of this production is the script by ET writer Melissa Mathison (written before she sadly passed away last year) and Oscar winner Mark Rylance as the Big Friendly Giant himself. Expect an enchanting adventure, and a whole new generation being introduced to the wonderful world of Roald Dahl.

Star Trek Beyond
What’s it about? On their five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go somewhere, the Enterprise crew find themselves stranded on a strange planet up against a hostile alien force. With Fast and Furious franchise veteran Justin Lin stepping into the giant nerdy shoes vacated by J.J. Abrams, I think it is safe to expect another fast-paced, action-packed space extravaganza. The hardcore fans looking for something that more closely resembles their beloved Star Trek will probably be disappointed. Fans of rip-roaring summer blockbusters will most likely be delighted. The early reviews have been very positive.

Chevalier
What’s it about? Six rich men aboard a luxury yacht in the Aegean Sea embark on a contest of manliness, to ultimately determine who is the best. Best at what exactly? Well…everything. Perfectly skewering male vanity, machismo, and the constant bravado of one-upmanship that defines so many male relationships, Chevalier is a Greek comedy directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari. Expect dry humour, awkward observations, and – as is always the case when men start competing – for things to get out of hand.

K-Shop
What’s it about? A modern day Sweeney Todd set in the grizzly (or should that be gristly) world of high street kebab shops and weekend binge drinking. When a kebab shop owner, is killed by pissed up thugs, it transpires that revenge is a dish best served with salad and wrapped in warm pitta. Yes, his vengeance seeking son kills the drunken buffoons, turns them into donner meat, and serves them to the next batch of lairy oiks. However, this is more than just a gross out horror comedy. Whilst there are plenty of laughs and violent thrills to be had along the way, K-Shop also aims a harsh light on the vile nature of british drinking culture, and is a timely reminder of the way immigrants are viewed in this country.
