Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher dies at 60

Carrie Fisher, the actress best known for her iconic portrayal of Princess Leia in the Star Wars saga has died, aged 60.

Fisher was taken ill onboard a flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday 23rd December after reportedly suffering a heart attack. She was taken to hospital where her condition was unclear.

A few hours ago a family statement announced that she had died on Tuesday morning, 27th December.

In a statement released on behalf of Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd, spokesman Simon Halls said;

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8.55 (16:55 GMT) this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

Apart from finding fame in the Star Wars franchise, Fisher was also a very successful writer, with her latest memoir The Princess Diarist, containing revelations of an affair with her co-star Harrison Ford whilst shooting the first Star Wars film.

Fisher, the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher, also starred in When Harry Met Sally… , The ‘Burbs, Hannah and Her Sisters, Sorority Row and most recently as the voice of Angela in Family Guy.

But it’s her work as Leia Organa in the George Lucas sci-fi epic that she will be most fondly remembered for, having reprised her role in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and had a digital version of her younger self appear in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. She was due to appear in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode 8 too.

Carrie Fisher will be greatly missed by all – a talented, funny and intelligent star who will forever be remembered by her legion of fans around the world. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends at this difficult time.
