Jared Leto is reprising his turn as the Joker for a new stand alone movie with Warner Bros.
Deadline reports that the actor will also executive-produce the project, which is in the early stages of development. Leto first played the Joker in the much-derided 2016 film Suicide Squad, also starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Jay Hernandez.
As the project is in such early stages, there are no details known about the plot yet. Joker is the second Suicide Squad character to get a spin-off movie following Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in the forthcoming Birds of Prey.
Interesting Warner Bros is also developing an origin movie for the Joker with director Todd Phillips (Old School) starring Joaquin Phoenix. That film will have no relation to Leto’s movie and is part of the film studio’s Origins series.
Reaction to the news of Leto’s Joker movie has been very mixed. Mashable wrote an article explaining all the reasons why they don’t want the movie to happen.
Leto will likely next be seen as Joker in Suicide Squad 2, currently slated to arrive in cinemas in 2019 but more likely 2020 or later. There are rumours of more spin-offs including a Harley Quinn and Joker movie, and Gotham City Sirens featuring Harley Quinn and allegedly Joker too.
