Horror Channel FrightFest Day 1 round-up & Day 2 preview

Horror Channel FrightFest has returned to haunt London and is now housed at the 12-screen Vue Cinema at Shepherd’s Bush, West London. Starting last night and running until 29th August 2016, this looks to be another break-out year for horror.

Now in its 17th year, the world renowned genre film festival will present 62 new feature films, embracing sixteen countries and bringing together established filmmakers, British first-timers and emerging international visionaries from six continents.

On Day 1 of Horror Channel FrightFest, Sean Brosnan’s My Father Die opened the festival. Starring Joe Anderson, John Schneider, Kevin Gage, Candace Smith and Gary Stretch, the film is a brutal revenge thriller. Asher loses both his speech and hearing during an attack that leaves his brother dead. The assassin is Asher’s own father, Ivan who shows no remorse. Jailed for the assault, but released two decades later due to prison overcrowding, a pumped-up Asher wastes no time in seeking the ultimate retribution.

Next up was the UK premiere of Stephen King’s Cell, starring John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Stacy Keach and Joshua Mikel. When a powerful signal is broadcast across mobile networks worldwide, every cell phone user’s mind is re-programmed turning them all into instant zombie killers.

Closing the opening night was director Cody Calahan’s Let Her Out, a waking nightmare where nothing is as it seems. Starring Alanna LeVierge, Nina Kiri, Adam Christie, Kate Fenton and Michael Lipka, this Canadian shocker features Helen, a 23 year-old who remains damaged psychologically after her Hooker mother tried to kill her in the womb. She suffers a traumatic head injury in an accident and soon starts seeing dark visions.

Day 2 looks to be another packed 24 hours of horror mayhem. Here’s what’s playing today in the main screens.

The Chamber stars Charlotte Salt, Johannes Kuhnke, Christian Hillborg, Elliot Levey and James McArdle in a nautical thriller that turns into a fight for survival.

They Call Me Jeeg Robot is an Italian effort starring Claudio Santamaria, Luca Marinelli, Ilenia Pastorelli, Stefano Ambrogi and Aurizio Tesei. Small-time crook Enzo uses the superpowers gained after falling in the contaminated River Tiber to take revenge on The Gypsy, a crazed gangster in Rome.

Pet, directed by Carles Torrens gets its UK premiere at Frightfest, starring Dominic Monaghan, Ksenia Solo, Jennette McCurdy, Nathan Parsons and Gary J. Tunnicliffe. A psychological thriller, a stalker takes drastic action when he realises his feelings aren’t reciprocated.
