Fifty Shades of Grey breaks UK & Ireland box office records

Fifty Shades of Grey arrived in cinemas on Friday just in time for Valentine’s Day and the much-anticipated erotic drama rocketed to the top of the UK and Ireland box office.

The film garnered Ā£13.5 million in its opening weekend taking more than the rest of the Top 10 combined. Fifty Shades of Grey is the UK and Ireland’s biggest ever 18 certificate non-franchise/sequel opening as well as the largest February and Valentine’s Day debut. It is also the biggest debut of 2015 so far.

In the US Fifty Shades of Grey took $81.7 million at the box office over the weekend. The film smashed Valentine’s and President’s Day weekend records, and has become the second-highest February debut ever, behind Passion of the Christ’s $83.9 million opening in 2004.

Fifty Shades of Grey stars Jamie Dornan in the iconic role of Christian Grey opposite Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele. The film is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and produced by Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti alongside E L James, the creator of the series. The screenplay for the film is by Kelly Marcel.
