Christmas Movies A to Z – Y: Yodelling

It’s the penultimate selection in our Christmas Movies A to Z and once again we’re faced with no film starting with the latest letter.

For Y we’ve gone with Yodelling, which links nicely to The Sound of Music. While not technically a Christmas film, it is shown every Christmas and loved by families all over the world.

The epic 3-hour musical stars Julie Andrews as Maria, an Austrian woman studying to become a nun. She’s sent to live with Captain Georg von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) by the Mother Abbess (Peggy Wood), who believes she’s more suited to a life in the outside world.

Maria takes on the job of looking after his seven children and as she gets to know them, and the Captain, better she finds herself unexpectedly falling in love.

The Sound of Music is an absolute classic and one of the finest musicals you’ll ever see. It’s been performed countless times on stage and Country singer Carrie Underwood tried her hand at playing Maria in a live TV version in the US.

The songs from the film have lived on and been covered countless times by stars such as Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani.
