Captain Marvel – everything we know so far

There will be spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War in this article. You have been warned…

Having built the Marvel Cinematic Universe on (relatively speaking) grounded and Earth-bound adventures, Marvel Studios and their merry band of filmmakers have spent the past few years taking steps into more cosmic territory. And that is where US Air Force pilot Carol Danvers – aka intergalactic ass-kicker and mightiest of all heroes Captain Marvel – joins the party.

There have been many superheroes over the years calling themselves Captain Marvel, but the most popular character from the comics to use that name has always been Carol Danvers. Here she will be played by Academy Award winner Brie Larson, who becomes the first female solo lead character of a film in the MCU. It’s only taken twenty films, but they got there in the end.

This 90s set adventure will see Danvers teaming up with S.H.I.E.L.D. to fight an alien invasion on earth. We couldn’t be any more excited about this film, about seeing this character on the big screen, and discovering how her story will fit into the epic tapestry of the MCU. We’re especially looking forward to the scene where her pager beeps and invites her to come and sort out that big mean purple fella.

Here’s everything we know so far about Captain Marvel…

When will Captain Marvel be released?

Captain Marvel will be released in the UK on 8th March 2019.

Who will star in Captain Marvel?

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel will be played by Oscar winning actress Brie Larson. She is joined by Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury. As this is set in the mid-90s he will be de-aged using the same incredible special effects used on Michael Douglas in Ant-Man and Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.  He’ll also still have both of his peepers working. But for how long?

Ben Mendelsohn continues his run of cinematic villainy as Talos, the shape-shifting leader of the Skrulls (more about them later). Gemma Chan is Minn-Erva, Lashana Lynch is Maria Rambeau, and Clark Gregg (also de-aged) returns to the MCU as Phil Coulson.

Jude Law is playing Mar-Vell, the Commander of Starforce, and Carol Danvers’ mentor. And fans of Guardians of the Galaxy will no doubt be delighted to see Djimon Honsou return as Korath, and Lee Pace reprising Kree fanatic and all round bad dude Ronan the Accuser.

As if that wasn’t enough, Annette Bening is also in the film.

Who will direct Captain Marvel?

Captain Marvel will be co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Not exactly household names (yet), Boden and Fleck are a writing and directing team, best known for indie dramas Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind.

They’ve never done anything at this level before, but that is very much in keeping with Kevin Feige’s approach to the MCU. He tends to go for directors with a unique vision, and who will bring depth, humour, and character to the film. Once you’re invested in the characters, the big blockbuster spectacle tends to take care of itself. That will once again be the hope for Boden and Fleck’s take on Captain Marvel.

Who will write the screenplay for Captain Marvel?

Captain Marvel has been written by Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Jac Schaeffer. The script is based on a story by Guardians of the Galaxy screenwriter Nicole Perlman.

The character of Carol Danvers was created by Gene Thomas and Roy Colan.

What can we expect from Captain Marvel?

Do you remember in the first trailer, there is a scene where Captain Marvel punches an old woman in the face? And people on the Internet who apparently don’t know how to use Google wrote a bunch of stupid articles about it? Well that “old woman” is a Skrull. And the Skrulls are the baddies in this film.

They are shape-shifting aliens, and have been a fixture in the comics since the 1960s. Their attempted invasion of Earth, as well as their epic galactic war with the Kree, will play a significant part in the plot of Captain Marvel. But we don’t really know all that much more than that.

As we’re in the endgame now of this current Avengers arc, the plot details around all of the upcoming films are extremely well protected. But we know from the trailers that Carol Danvers is a US Air Force test pilot, who is rescued in space by the Kree and imbued with phenomenal power. She becomes involved in the aforementioned Kree-Skrull war, but also finds herself back on earth in the mid-90s.

I think it’s safe to say that the Marvel formula will keep the action zippy and spectacular, with plenty of humour and heart. It’s hard to imagine Larson being anything other than fantastic in the lead role, and she is supported by one of the most exciting casts that the MCU has ever assembled.

I don’t think that the deeds of Thanos, and the events depicted in Infinity War will feature in anything pre-credits. But as we know from the post-credit scene in Infinity War, before he is dusted along with half of every other living thing in the universe, Nick Fury sends a distress call to someone. And the symbol that appears on his intergalactic planetary pager, is that of Captain Marvel. So it will surely be referenced in this film, but I would expect it to happen in the mid or post-credit sequence.

When will we see a trailer for Captain Marvel?

The first trailer arrived in September 2018 and introduced us to Brie Larson’s take on the iconic character.

A second trailer was released in December, giving us a few more character beats, and better idea of what the plot might have in store for us.

Will there be more films after Captain Marvel?

What idiot asked this question? Of course there will be. Unless Avengers: Endgame has the biggest downer ending of all time – yes even more depressing and upsetting than Infinity War – then I would expect Captain Marvel to play a fairly significant role in future avenging adventures.
