Logitech z50 Multimedia Speaker review

Logitech really are pushing the boundaries when it comes to multimedia speakers. Recently we reviewed the fantastic Z600 Bluetooth Speakers designed for use with smart phones, tablets and laptops. For those who couldn’t quite afford the higher end speakers, Logitech has also released the z50 Multimedia Speaker which retails for considerably less and could be a good option for those who want to get better sound out of their devices.

The z50 Multimedia Speaker, like the Z600 Bluetooth Speakers, is designed to be used with smart phones, tablets and laptops. The rather small speaker looks as if it may not give you great quality sound but once you plug it in and give it a go, you’ll realise it’s actually rather powerful. When we think back to the tiny little speakers we used to have for our discman/Walkman back in the day, the z50 Multimedia Speaker really blows them out of the water. The sound that comes from the speaker is impressively loud and crystal clear.

We played around with the speaker a fair bit moving it around as we listened to music and watched movies. To get the best sound quality the speaker placement should be central behind whatever device you’re using. With there being only one speaker placing it to the left or right of a device can make the sound feel a bit directional but placing it central will give you no problems. As part of our testing we watched a movie on our iPad and were really impressed with the output quality of the speaker. All of the dialogue was crystal clear and crisp with the score and music just as intense as it would have been had we watched it on our flatscreen TV.

Whilst the sound quality is great the one downside is that this isn’t a portable speaker, well not in the true sense anyway. As it’s powered by an AC adaptor you have to be near a plug socket to use it which means you’re limited as to where you can actually use it. This is one thing good old-fashion speakers of this nature had over them is that they were battery-powered. This is quite a drawback and we hope that in the next generation of speakers Logitech addresses this.

Design-wise the speaker is clean and streamlined. You can choose one of three colours – pink, grey or blue – and it will fit in nicely with any kind of décor if you wanted to keep the speaker in one place. The curve of the speaker is on top and the design helps to provide the best sound possible. On the back of the speaker there is one 3.5mm input so you can connect the device to whatever you would like.

Overall if you want great sound from your portable devices then the z50 Multimedia Speaker is a good low-price option. Despite the frustration of it needing to be plugged in this is a good little speaker that offers much better sound quality than you’d expect. It’s perfect for use to provide mood music in a room or to snuggle up with your iPad and watch a movie.
