It Follows DVD review

Jay (Maika Monroe) is a young girl who starts to get serious with her new boyfriend only to find out that she has been given a curse. Seeing frightful visions of people relentlessly following her, she must find a way of breaking the cycle before she falls victim herself.

Writer/director David Robert Mitchell has crafted a very clever and atmospheric horror with It Follows. It’s a film packed with style, substance and plenty of eeriness that never lets up and always keeps you on the edge of your seat. Taking a very simple premise (the fear of being followed) and spinning it into something this immersive and uneasy is a very hard task but Mitchell manages this exceptionally well, making It Follows one of the best surprises of the year.

Fresh from her success opposite Dan Stevens in The Guest, Maika Monroe plays Jay and really leads the film to success. Her heady mix of girl-next-door appeal and an undeniable verve for acting makes her the perfect star for this film. She is always believable and has a great chemistry with everyone onscreen. Monroe is destined for big things having impressed in every one of her projects.

The supporting cast are all solid too with Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi and Lili Sepe all playing a pivotal role in the films success. This ensemble also really nails the concept of friends just hanging out in their spare time, not actually doing very much. Along with Mitchell’s writing and direction, the cast perfectly capture a moment of youth that’s very hard to translate onto the big screen. Many have failed but It Follows really gets this key element of growing up and it makes the film far more relatable as a result.

Crafting chills and scares with the simplest of set-ups, It Follows is a glorious homage to classic 70s and 80s horror with a real emphasis on organic terror. If you’ve ever felt like someone was following you, multiply that fear by a thousand and you’ll have some idea of what this movie is like.
