EF’s Underdogs Son Lux, Asgeir, and more

We’re back once more with a range of artist’s we’ve fallen in love with. Indeed it’s been busy at EF HQ with more and more music flowing through our doors we find it harder and harder to identify originality however we’ve done it and here are some of the artists that have captured our attention this past few months.

Son Lux

Ryan Lott is the brain behind the machine that is Son Lux. With production credits on four major feature films, which include Looper (2012), The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (2013) Son Lux is no stranger to success. Lott first started off in he industry composing music for commercials in New York however since then his career has included the release of his debut album, At War With Walls & Mazes in 2008, We Are rising in 2011 and last year he released Lanterns a magical record with beautifully laid out sounds. Alternate World his latest single is the opening track to his current album Lanterns released via Joyful Noise Recordings. The video itself shows a haunting story which marries Son Lux’s track perfectly.

Ryan Lott, AKA Son Lux, explains: “The past is a type of reality that haunts the present, and the film’s story and imagery evokes this feeling beautifully.”

What we love about this guy is the simplicity that seems to reflect in his tracks yet his sound is complex and haunting. Check out the video to Alternate World.

Battlecross

Non-pop bands/artists are always considered the underdogs; metal for one is littered with them. It’s kind of like watching a Premier League team take on Division 3 side in some cases, but often this gulf is just to the style of music not wanting to come out of a true loyal fan base.

A recent discovery of 2013, was the band Battlecross, hailing from Detroit, Michigan. These heavy metal underdogs have been slaving away to gain a name for themselves by touring with some of Metal’s finest as In Flames, Five Finger Death Punch and being personally selected for Metallica’s Orion Festival based in their home town was certainly a highlight.

Having just completed a European tour with Killswitch Engage and Trivium, they were the bottom of the bill and for this band it is a great learning curve. These are ones to definitely watch out for in 2014 and beyond when they return for the European Summer festivals such as Download.

We love this band because they hold the true spirit of heavy metal. Check out the video for Push, Pull, Destroy

Asgeir

Asgeir comes hailing from Iceland and is only 21 year’s old but don’t be fooled this young man has got talent in spades. His music, he likes to describe it as melodic folk and whilst playing guitar with his band The Lovely Lion his own material is mellower and somewhat more mainstream. We don’t mind though in fact we love this man, he’s hot, he’s talented and his music is infectious. Over here you may have heard of Asgeir as his track, Torrent appeared on Channel 4’s reality TV show, Made in Chelsea.

What we like about Asgeir is that he’s destined to for big things. Check out his track King and Cross.

Crissi Cochrane

Crissi Cochrane is from the other side of the pond in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The pop singer and songwriter marries the heart of the East Coast with the soul of Detroit on her new album, Little Sway.
Crissi attributes the change in her musical style to the change in her environment. Born and raised on the East Coast of Canada, Crissi moved to Windsor from Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2010. Windsor/Detroit’s dense radio airwaves, second-hand vinyl shops, and rich musical history sparked a creative revolution in the young writer.
What we love about Crissi is that she’s a little bit different! Check out Be Around.

Maia

Maia is a band filled with love for folk, the Talking Heads and David Bowie. The band’s music mixes eclectic styles and follows no song structures. The band’s second album, Pepper Stars was released 2012 and its style encompasses a strange mix of sounds. We’ve experienced the band in a small London venue in 2013 and thought that Maia were quite interesting. This isn’t the band that would stand out for being extravagant but rather instead its music shines through with its haunting melodies and interesting instrument choices. Maia’s new EP is set for release on April 28th and you can expect more psychedelic melodies which reflect the band’s love for eccentricity.

What we like about Maia is that we can see the potential. Check out the album Pepper Stars

Here you have our selection of new underdogs we hope you enjoy them as much as we did. Stay tuned for more acts soon.
