If you’re not up to date with Elementary and like to avoid spoilers we suggest you don’t read any further.

The episode opened up with a group reenacting the British defeat in the Revolutionary War. After a scene a man named George, one of the guys who was ‘killed’, turned out to actually be dead. During the reenactment someone had shot him.

Captain Gregson (Aidan Quinn) and Sherlock arrived on the scene to take witness statements. It was nearly impossible as everyone was in shock and all had different possible theories of what had happened. One guy mentioned seeing a white van near the site. The police examined the reenactment weapons while Watson and Detective Bell (Jon Michael Hill) interviewed George’s bodyguard. They discovered that George was in a lot of debt and had received several death threats.

Sherlock and Watson looked through George’s emails and found he had a difficult relationship with his daughter. In one email she even threatened to kill him if he ever tried to make contact with her again. They went to the commune where she lived to talk to her. Knowing she was estranged and facing a $5 million inheritance she was a prime suspect but she denied involvement.

Bell called to tell them George’s house had been burnt down. The fire turned out to be arson but they realised that the home was also looted first as there was a lot of silver missing.

Sherlock and Watson paid a visit to an artifact specialist. He agreed to help in exchange for help on a case he was stuck on. Sherlock took a look at the evidence and cracked the case in less than a minute. A new lead pointed at the Fire Chief who attended the blaze. He admitted that he had stolen from the scene but said the fire wasn’t him.

During the night, Watson awoke to find Sherlock performing experiments. He was using an old technique to read burnt documents found in George’s fire safe. Some of the documents contained rare and valuable signatures from Button Gwinnett, a founding father who had signed the Declaration of Independence.

Eventually it was Watson who worked out who the culprit was. The man who gave the white van story had been trying to buy land from George. They got a warrant to search his house but uncovered nothing and the man was looking rather pleased with himself. They later worked out that he must had hid his gun in some portable toilets and tested cat litter in his basement which linked him to the arson.

Elsewhere in the episode, Sherlock visited the doctor as he noticed his PCS symptoms were worsening. The doctor prescribed him some meds. A later visit Sherlock complained the meds were making him tired. The doctor suggested that Sherlock take a break from his work to rest.

At the end of the episode, Sherlock told Watson that this may be his last case for a while due to needing to rest. He then went to meet Michael who said he had something to help him. Michael presented Sherlock with a photo of the girl he was seen burying at the end of last episode. Michael explained that she used to attend meetings like clockwork but had gone missing. He wanted Sherlock to try and find her.
