In the latest episode of Conviction, the CIU team reviewed the case of black activist Porscha Williams, she was convicted of shooting and killing a cop during a protest. They chose to take the case after a black teenager was killed by a cop.
The team were able to determine that witnesses has been confused between Porscha and another girl at the protest. A key witness who claimed to see her shoot the cop was found to by lying thanks to a photo showing him vandalising a police car a block away. Also a review of the evidence showed that the cop was shot from behind meaning that Porscha couldn’t have done it.
Eventually it turned out that another witness was the culprit and he fled when confronted by Maxine (Merrin Dungey) and Sam (Shawn Ashmore). They caught up with him and he pulled a gun. Maxine tried to talk him down and seemed to be getting through to him before he suddenly turned it on himself and committed suicide.
Hayes (Hayley Atwell) went to see Wallace (Eddie Cahill) and discovered that Naomi (Ilfenesh Hadera) was in town to help him, after he hired her last episode. They agreed to meet for a drink and did so later where the pair flirted before being interrupted by Wallace.
Elsewhere in the episode, Tess (Emily Kinney) told Frankie (Manny Montana) about how she had witnessed the murder of her aunt. She was 12 at the time and had picked the wrong man out of a police line-up.
The man had been cleared after 5 years in prison and Tess felt guilty. She’d been visiting his coffee van and leaving him large tips each time. After talking to Frankie she got the courage to start a conversation with him but was unable to explain her connection.
At the end of the episode, Hayes went in search of Naomi but she wasn’t at her office. She left a voicemail and then decided to pop in to see Wallace. As she looked into his office she saw him kissing Naomi and walked away upset.
The next episode of the season is A Simple Man. With a documentary film crew in tow, Hayes looks into the case of a mentally impaired man jailed for burning down his family’s restaurant.
