From two-time Academy Award winning director Barbara Kopple and Academy Award winning writer Stephen Gaghan (Traffic), Havoc is a fast paced coming of age tale with an explosive ending that will leave you wanting more.
The original treatment of the script was written in 1993 by Jessica Kaplan, who was 14 years old at the time, and was based on her own observations of her affluent white classmates in West Los Angeles. Her script was sold to New Line Cinema two years later for $150,000. Originally titled “The Powers That Be”, the script went unused for seven years, eventually gaining traction with the studio after it received a re-write as well as a new title from Stephen Gaghan. On June 6, 2003, shortly before filming began, Kaplan was killed in a plane crash in Los Angeles, along with four other people.
Kopple has won two Academy Awards for documentaries – the first in 1976 for Harlan County, USA, about a Kentucky miners’ strike, and the second in 1991 for American Dream, the story of the Hormel Foods strike in Austin, Minnesota in 1985-86. This was her first foray into fiction.
Hathaway is one of a select group to win an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Critics Choice Award for a single role. (Not this film, obviously – it was for Les Mis)
Synopsis: They were done with playing it safe. When Allison (Anne Hathaway) and Emily (Bijou Phillips) leave their rich affluent neighbourhood for a joyride through east L.A they gain a glimpse of a dangerous landscape involving drugs, sex and gang brutality. As their fear quickly turns to infatuation, Allison and Emily find themselves seduced by a dark and dangerous world and in a situation they may not be able to get out of.
