The Voice UK week 5 recap

First up on tonight’s show is Steven Alexander, his Aunty Max is one half of Diva who made it to Team Tom last year so she has been giving him some sage advice. Steven opens the show with ‘Your Game’ and its clear Kylie is keen! Miss Minogue hits her button and boogies away oblivious to Ricky and Wills games behind her. Tom ignores them and in traditional Tom style hits his button on the final note.  Tom is excited to learn about the family connection with Diva, will this sway Steven his way? Nope, Team Kylie it is.

Fiona Kelly now, she has a horse called Bob and apparently he is the perfect man. Sadly Bob isn’t waiting back stage with Marvin to support Fiona.  Fiona’s operatic take on ‘Rule the World’ is an interesting one but it does get the coaches turning. Fiona and Will have an expectedly bizarre exchange and he commends her on her angelic voice. Ricky does a terrible Gary Barlow impression, Fiona goes home to Bob.

Next we meet Chris Royal, who has been singing since he was a kid and apparently went down a bit of a storm at holiday camps. Chris has moved down to the big smoke to get his big break. Will this be it? Chris’ slowed down version of ‘Wake Me Up’ is rather lovely. Ricky is the first to turn followed quickly by Tom and the queen of chair dancing Kylie.  Tom said ‘it just got better and better’ and he thinks Chris is great. Kylie says his voice is like honey and tempts Chris with an offer of spending time together going through his cd collection. Ricky tells Chris ‘I would not give up until you have won this’ and with this Wilson seals the deal.

Enter some repeat offenders; Nick Dixon didn’t make it last year but was told by Tom last year that he wasn’t quite ready but he would love to hear him sing again. Elesha was one half of NuTana last year on Team Will and is back as a solo performer this year.  Nick has chosen ‘Home Again’ and his voice sounds great to us however it isn’t second time lucky for poor Nick as the coaches don’t turn.  The coaches encourage him to persevere. Nick gives the coaches his business cards and they seem delighted. Elesha’s turn now, she sings ‘Everything Has Changed’ and it’s not looking good for Elesha either until sneaky Tom surprises her by turning on the closing note! Will reminisces a bit with Elesha before Tom welcomes her to his team.

Lucy Winter now, she is currently based in Cyprus as her husband is in the armed forces, so faces a pretty long commute if she makes it through. Lucy sings ‘Somebody to Love’ and Kylie encourages Tom to turn. Ricky seems to be thinking hard and we think they would be a good combo but sadly it isn’t meant to be for Lucy. Ricky commends her for the passion and energy she gave her performance but says it’s not ‘his bag’. Will and Tom think she was trying too hard.

‘Lethal Weapon’ Max Murphy now, who is a professional judo athlete. 18 year old cutie Max takes to the stage with his guitar and performs ‘Electric Feel’. The coaches compare him to Jim Morrison and we think it’s a fantastic song choice. Ricky waits till the very last second before hitting his button and offering Max a place on his team, which is excellent because we like Max a lot. Kylie tells Max he is in safe hands with Ricky. Tom tells the audience he also likes ‘physical on- on-one things’. Awkward.  Ricky says ‘you made it your own’ so if we were playing the X Factor drinking games this is when we would all be required to drink.

16 year old Joe is an Irish dancing champion. Joe opts for Ben Howards ‘Keep Your Head Up’ and it seems a little weaker than some of the other vocals we have heard tonight but Kylie and Ricky hear enough to hit their buttons. We learn that Joe is studying music at college and then Will Irish dances with him much to the audiences’ amusement. Ricky accidently quotes a Tom Jones song, again much to the audiences’ amusement (and also in The Voice drinking game). Joe joins team Kylie taking her to 9 acts. Bringing up the rear is Will with just 6.

24 year old James Byron now, who is looking forward to a chance to be judged purely on vocal ability. James sings ‘Cry Baby’ and the coaches listen intently. Will waits until the last seconds to offer James a place on his team. The coaches commend James for his androgynous voice.  Will is delighted because he feels he has an act that can compete with Tom’s powerful female vocalists.

21 year Jade now, sporting a very slinky black dress – but as we all know looks don’t help on this show.  Jade sings ‘Sweet about me’ and Kylie doesn’t need much persuading as she turns by the first chorus and is quickly joined by Ricky… and Will… and Tom. First full house of the night! The boys are unusually quiet when they see sexy Jade. Tom pulls himself together first and turns on the charm but faces stiff competition from all the coaches who fight hard for Jade. Jade wants to know who she will be able to relate to most and finally opts to join Team Kylie.

Finally it’s Femi from London, who has come through homelessness and difficult times to build a home for his young family. Femi’s performs the Stevie Wonder hit ‘Ma Cherie Amour’ and the coaches debate whether he is Team Tom material. Will performs his favourite trick of waiting until the very last possible note to turn, securing his second act of the night.
