The Voice UK Live Quarter Finals Recap

The much discussed live shows are here and ‘Damm with jam’ Team Will is up first. Team Will consists of retro lovely Sophie May, tiny Iesher with the big voice and let’s face it everyone’s favourite, Jermaine. Emma introduces the acts and is looking gorgeous in a bright yellow number. Opening the show is Jermaine, who is treating The Voice like an election campaign and in his VT meets Ed Miliband. Sound the X Factor alarm, Jermaine has got a platform and cheesy dancers!  He sings ‘Treasure’ and it’s a pretty good start to the show (if a little bit 90s). Will says that he sung it ‘the way Luther would have sung it’ and Ricky says he could have sung the budget and we would have loved it.

Will says that Sophie May is a singer from the 40s reincarnated and we learn that she can’t cook. Sophie May is singing Moondance. Her dress is nice but we can’t say that SP is one of our faves. We feel like it’s a little low for her and – cliché alert – she doesn’t really ‘own the stage’. Wrapping up Team Will is Iesher. She has been working with Will on her confidence and he leaves her a big screen message of support in the cinema before the film starts, which is very Will. Iesher sings ‘Rather Be’ and Will dances on his chair but we think Iesher struggles with the low notes. Iesher tells Emma ‘she messed up a little bit’ and so Will gets the band to play again so she can sing again.  It sounds the same. As ever the judges give thoroughly positive feedback and Kylie commends her ‘strut’ and her ‘dip.’

Will has to offer a ‘fast pass’ to the semi-final to one of his acts – his last decision of the show Emma says.  Will deliberates and then asks if they will ‘take off the scary music’. Will says everyone is ‘super mega fresh’. He tells Sophie she looks like an award and eventually gives his fast pass to Jermaine, which we definitely think is the right decision.  Emma says Marvin is waiting to talk to Jermaine in the ‘v room’ which we still think is a terrible name.

Up next is Team Kylie: Lee, Jamie and Racheal. Jamie’s sister has been using a loudspeaker and a yellow mini to help get votes for him. We think ‘Thousand Miles’ is a weird song choice but we like Jamie’s coat.  Kylie seems a bit tongue tied and says he is ‘dependable.’ Tom says it was strong, powerful and ‘reminded me of me a little bit’. Ricky says he has a ‘demon voice’ but means this in a good way. The coaches really are a friendly bunch.

Lee now, who sang that Muse-y version of Careless Whisper last week, which upset everyone on Gogglebox. Lee sings ‘Help Me Make it Through the Night’ which we have to admit we are not familiar with. We love Lee’s intensity but are not sure this is as good as his past performances. Will says it was ‘enchanting’ and Kylie says it was stunning. 17 year old Rachael now, in her VT we see lots of her Dad whose reactions we have all been enjoying immensely! Racheal sings ’Shine A Light’ in a bacofoil skirt whilst young people in bright clothing hug behind her. It’s all a bit confusing and another dodgy song choice in our book. The judges unsurprisingly say how brilliant it was. Kylie gives her fast pass to Jamie.

First up for Team Tom is Bizzi, in his VT we see Bizzi in all his gospel glory and meet his excellent friend Connie. Someone get Connie her own show please, she’s amazing. Bizzi sings ‘If you Really Love Me’ in a fetching white tuxedo jacket and tartan trousers. It’s a smooth, energetic performance and Will says ‘that’s what it sounds like when you know what you’re doing’. Sally now, who we think is a real contender to win this show. Every time she has sung, Tom, and the nation, has welled up. Sally looks gorgeous, she sings ‘To Love Somebody’ and it’s such a mature and simple performance compared to all the others we have seen so far tonight. We are so pleased they didn’t give her dancers or graphics and just let her have the stage to herself. Sally’s life experience shines through.

Finally for Team Tom is Georgia of the cat’s eye glasses. Georgia sings Sam Smith’s ‘Money on My Mind’ and gets a sepia tint. It’s a hard song and Georgia gives it a really good go but we don’t think it demonstrates her talents as well as her song choice in the last round. Tom awards his fast pass to Sally, hooray!

Closing the show is Team Ricky. We predict a riot! We don’t really, everyone is far too nice on The Voice for this. First up is Chris, the Manchester boy with the big range. Ooh, Chris has had a makeover! He sings the Elbow song ‘One Day Like This’ and it’s a fantastic song choice. Good work Wilson. We really like this and suspect Ricky’s fast pass will be a tough call.  Ricky says Chris’ performance was outstanding and Will says he was a bonafide star tonight.

Curly haired Blackpool lass Emily now, she sings ‘Happy’ and we like it but is sounds EXACTLY like Christina Aguilera, which we know is no mean feat, but we would maybe like to hear something a little more original sounding. Closing the show is the girl most likely to be a popstar and Katy Perry look-a-like Christina Marie. Christina Marie has quit her job for the show so fingers crossed it works out! CM’s epic performance of ‘Everlong’ involves a dress that changes colour – very Hunger Games. She is a with no doubt a great singer and informs us ‘that she was throwing up big time this morning’. CM loses points when she cries during the feedback, which is obviously all excellent. No surprises when Ricky gives his fast pass to Christina Marie.

So that’s all folks. We’ll be back for the results in 10 minutes with Jason Derulo!
