The Following season 2 Trust Me recap

Tonightā€™s episode of The Following served up a few serious twists as the second season of Kevin Williamsonā€™s serial killer thriller put is foot on the accelerator.

If you havenā€™t seen Trust Me or donā€™t want any spoilers from the episode then we suggest you stop reading right now. If you want to relive all the action then keep reading to get your spoiler fill.

Where do we start? So much happened during Trust Me that weā€™d best be careful that we fit it all in. Weā€™ll start off with Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) who was caught by his current lady friend Judy (Carrie Preston) trying to cover up the murder of the Reverend with the help of Mandy (Tiffany Boone). As Judy looked on in horror, Mandy tried to explain to her mother that it wasnā€™t what it looked like before Joe corrected her saying ā€˜itā€™s exactly what it looks likeā€™.

For the majority of the episode the tension grew between Judy and Joe as the former began to realise that she hadnā€™t managed to reform Joe like she thought she had. Even worse was that her daughter had fallen under his spell. After Joe almost killed Judy by strangling her, he decided instead to tie her up on the sofa and make it look like sheā€™d murdered the Reverend. When Joe left the room to look for his knife, Judy pleaded with Mandy to help her by stabbing Joe. Instead Mandy turned the knife on her mother committing her first murder.

It seems that Joe has formed a bond with Mandy and the two are in cahoots as they burn down the house, get in the car and drive away. Heading to New York then are they? We reckon itā€™s a pretty safe bet they are.

Emma Hill (Valorie Curry) finally got some much needed screen time tonight as she met up with Mark (Sam Underwood) following the twinsā€™ outing on TV after being caught on CCTV at Lilyā€™s fundraiser. Despite being initially wary Emma went to Markā€™s hotel room where she met his twin Luke, their evil French friend Giselle and Carlos who sheā€™d been trying to call. She got there just in time to watch Luke murder Carlos but finally had it confirmed that Joe is indeed alive and well.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on which way you look at it) Emmaā€™s hideout was discovered by the FBI after they tracked her on CCTV entering Carlosā€™ apartment. Agent Mendez (Valerie Cruz) sent in a SWAT time rounding up 6 followers whilst Emma was out of the house. Only one of them survived so could that threaten Emmaā€™s freedom? We donā€™t imagine sheā€™ll let that be the case for long.

Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) started the episode having nightmares about Joe. He was given another dressing down by Agent Mendez and the cold-shoulder from Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore) after they discovered heā€™d been with-holding evidence. Ryan agrees to turn over everything he took from Carlosā€™ apartment but before he gets chance Mikeā€™s already broken into his apartment and taken it. Whilst there Mike discovered Ryanā€™s Joe Carroll room and questioned him over what heā€™s been doing and why heā€™s been keeping it secret from the FBI.

A discussion took place where Ryan suggested that he tracked down a half-brother of Joeā€™s in England who went missing 14 months earlier. He thinks that the half-brother was killed and switched with Joe in the lighthouse so the DNA would match. Weston thinks itā€™s nonsense but we know Ryan is right.

When Ryan turns up at Emmaā€™s hideout post shoot-out, Mendez tells him heā€™s to stay clear of the investigation and of subway massacre survivor Lily Gray (Connie Nielsen). Of course Ryan goes straight to see her and the two appear to be heading down a one-way road of falling in love. That is until Ryan realises the inconsistencies in Lilyā€™s statement about the night of the subway attack. She claimed she was in a rush that night but CCTV clearly shows her ignore a train before getting on the one where she was attacked. As Ryan stares over at Lily in her gallery, she realises heā€™s suspected something and does a runner down the stairs. She quickly takes out her guard with a knife to the head (nice) before exiting the building through a secret compartment. She emerges onto the street disguised with a wig and shades when a police officer recognises her. Quick to stop him she pulls out a taser and down he goes allowing her to escape.

When sheā€™s a safe distance away, and stolen a mobile phone, she cryptically calls someone telling them sheā€™s been found out. She then calls Ryan and tells him she was supposed to deliver him to Joe but now sheā€™s going to have to turn up empty handed. Did you suspect she was part of the cult? We had inkling as she made it out of the subway reasonably unscathed.

Ryan then scratched his head along with Mendez and Weston as they couldnā€™t believe theyā€™d been fooled by her. They werenā€™t the only ones!

As the episode came to an end, Lily climbed into a car which had Luke driving it. Itā€™s soon revealed that Lily is actually Luke and Markā€™s mother. We can safely say we didnā€™t see that coming? Where are they heading and what will they do next? Youā€™re going to have to tune in next week to find out arenā€™t you? We canā€™t wait!

The Following continues at 9/8c Monday on FOX in the US and 10pm Tuesday on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
