Robin Windsor’s Same Sex Ballroom for Beginners

Strictly Come Dancing star Robin Windsor has started a new venture that brings Ballroom to everyone. The professional dancer recently launched a Ballroom for Beginners evening and on the back of that success also announced his first ever Same Sex Ballroom for Beginners class at Wilton’s Music Hall. Proving that dancing really is for everyone, and not just a couple comprising one man and one woman, Robin held his Same Sex Ballroom for Beginners evening last night and it was a roaring success.

Over the course of the 3-hour class, Robin walked us through three different dances. The evening began with a Cha Cha and Robin soon set out the formula for the class. He took his place on stage at the front and slowly demonstrated a series of steps. Starting things off easily, all the couples were given steps to learn on their own so that they could grasp the basics without injuring their partner, or anyone else in the room. Once we got hold of the basics, Robin upped the difficulty slightly adding in additional steps.

Once the basics were in place, we all coupled up (most of us with the person we went with) and we ran through the routine together with our partner. Robin explained the steps for the leader and the follower, making it clear which person was required to do the different steps. After a few runs through it was time to put the steps to music and it was impressive how much we’d all learned.

After mastering the cha cha (we wish!) it was time for a break before we learned the Jive and the Waltz. Robin took us through the same process piecing the different steps together for each person in the couple then putting it together and eventually dancing to music.

The skill level of the people in the room varied but it didn’t matter. We all laughed together as we stumbled through some steps, missed others and stomped on our partner’s feet when we got our left confused with our right. Robin’s instruction was clear and the pace of the evening allowed everyone to get to grips with the routines. In-between routines Robin took some questions from the audience and talked about his experiences on Strictly Come Dancing.

Over the course of the evening there were some special guests too. Robin was joined by his The People’s Strictly partner Anna Kennedy for a rendition of their perfect scoring Charleston. West End star Ricky Rojas and singer Marcus Collins performed during the evening too providing the perfect soundtrack for the dances we’d learned.

Robin Windsor’s Same Sex Ballroom for Beginners was a lot of fun. We were a little nervous going into the class but Robin is a great teacher and put everyone at ease. Within no time we were performing steps we would never have thought possible and we definitely worked up a sweat. Robin will be announcing more Ballroom for Beginners evenings in the future and we highly recommend you take yourself down to one of them. Whether you’ve never danced in your life or you’ve got some experience, it’s something everyone can do and with Robin as your teacher you’re in safe hands.
