Move that body

Ariaā€™s (Lucy Hale) road to freedom was almost cut very short when the police pulled up behind her after she discovered Archerā€™s (Huw Collins) body in her boot. Some quick thinking enabled Aria to see the police officer off before he looked in her boot. Relieved to get away, Aria realised that she had an opportunity to take the fall so her friends would be free and she headed to Rosewood P.D.

Meanwhile Ezra (Ian Harding) scalded the group for their treatment of Aria, reminding them all that they had done awful things because they were scared. Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) helped track Aria down and Ezra stopped her from going to the police. As they talked at The Brew about what was best to do, they were alarmed to discover the body had been removed from the boot.

A motherā€™s gift

Spencer (Troian Bellisario) noticed a message from Mary (Andrea Parker) in a wine bottle while she was with the group. Following its instructions, Spencer headed to the Lose Woods where she found Mary. Preparing to leave town, Mary informed Spencer that she had put the Lost Woodsā€™ deed in her name and Alisonā€™s (Sasha Pieterse) so they could use it for money if they needed legal assistance now that Tanner (Roma Maffia) was trying to get arrest warrants for them.

Mona madness

Mona (Janel Parrish) found that the game had been stolen from her apartment and in its place was a note asking her to meet someone for pie at the Two Crows diner. Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Caleb followed her and once Spencer arrived, Caleb confronted Mona. She complained that someone was always taking the game away from her and after being slipped a note that told her to ā€˜leave nowā€™ she disappeared into the womenā€™s toilets.

The trio followed her but there was no sign of Mona anywhere. Caleb discovered a secret door that led to tunnels so he and Spencer checked it out, while Hanna drove back to Rosewood. While they explored the tunnels Caleb told Spencer that he and Hanna were married and the two shared a sweet moment.

Hanna meanwhile noticed petals falling from the top of the church so she went to investigate. She found Mona there dressed like she used to in school and was disturbed when Mona kept calling her Charlotte (Vanessa Ray). Mona confessed to killing Charlotte and through flashbacks we saw Mona confront Charlotte after realising she wasnā€™t reformed after all. Holding a screwdriver to her back, Mona taunted Charlotte to jump and threatened to push her if she didnā€™t end her own life.

A further twist came when Mona was taken to the Lost Woods and she told Spencer she messed up killing Charlotte. Asking what she meant by that, Spencer coaxed the full story from Mona who revealed that she didnā€™t push her out of the window but instead a fight broke out and Charlotte was fatally injured by a producing piece of metal on the wall.

Puzzled out

Monaā€™s confession led to the final pieces of the puzzle being left for the Liars to find on Hannaā€™s car. They put the pieces into the game, which had been moved to Alisonā€™s house by A.D. (oh and that flashforward from ages ago was all a dream!), and it revealed some creepy looking eyes. The phone from the game bid the Liars congratulations and told them the grand prize was to find Archerā€™s body at Alisonā€™s Aunt Carolā€™s house. The girls rushed over there with shovels to dig the body up but Aria refused. She convinced her friends to stop playing the game and walk away.

As they did Tanner and the police turned up and they were all taken into custody. Sure that they were about to be charged with murder, the Liars were shocked to see Mary in the interrogation room confessing to the murders of Archer and Jessica (Andrea Parker). While they knew she had murdered Jessica, the Liars were shocked to see Mary take the fall for Archer knowing full well she didnā€™t do it.

Tanner let the Liars go but she made it clear that she knew Mary hadnā€™t really killed Archer. Spencer tearfully watched Mary get taken away and as she was led away, Mary put her finger to her lips telling Spencer not to say anything further.
