IKEA appeals to social media fans with new advert

What was life like before Instagram? That’s the question the funny new advert aims to answer.

These days we’re used to sharing pictures of everything we do from nights out to simple meals prepared at home to devour in front of the TV. IKEA have taken the social media craze of oversharing and applied it to a 17th Century scenario for their new advert.

Directed by Tompa & Rondo, the advert depicts an aristocratic family about to sit down for a meal. Before they do the father of the family asks a painter to capture their meal so it can be shown off around society and feedback can be gathered.

What follows is a funny short film with the painting being carted round so that everyone can see what the family is about to eat and react to it with either approval or disapproval.

At the end of the advert the timeline jumps to the present as a father takes endless pictures of his food while the family sits patiently waiting to tuck in.

It’s safe to say that the advert makes a very good point about today’s society, which seems unable to function without getting approval from someone about everything they do.
