Dancing On Ice 2014 quarter final recap

Last weekā€™s Dancing On Ice results show was a shocker wasnā€™t it? We waved goodbye to Suzanne Shaw as she lost the skate-off to Kyran Bracken after falling over and making mistakes once again.

Now thereā€™s 5 couples left in the competition and tonight the show got even tougher. Each of the celebrities had to perform a solo skate as well as a routine with their professional partner. Only a week away from the semi-final and thereā€™s still everything to skate for.

Kicking off the show tonight was Kyran Bracken and his partner Nina Ulanova. Last week Kyran made a few mistakes and found himself in the skate-off. The judges chose to save him over Suzanne Shaw (yes we were shocked too) admitting that he had skated better. During his training video Kyran promised Nina that he would be a bit more careful this week with the tricks after they narrowly missed a nasty accident last week. Kyran and Nina skated to I Wanna Be Like You from The Jungle Book performed by Robbie Williams and Olly Murs.

That was a better performance than last week but we canā€™t help but feel that Kyranā€™s time on the ice is coming to an end. It could be him that leaves tonight.

Kyran and Nina were awarded 34.0 out of 40 from the judges.

Jason told Kyran that he was improving and had finally hit his stride before telling him that he gave personality tonight. Robin said Kyran was ā€˜terrificā€™ but told him to be careful when it comes to the footwork. Karen agreed with Robin and said Kyran needs to be cleaner on his footwork. Ashley said she enjoyed that Kyran was having fun on the ice and performing better.

Hayley Tamaddon was the second star onto the ice tonight. Last night she was told her performance mark would always be higher than her technical mark so this week she worked on her skating with partner Dan Whiston. Hayley was the first celeb to solo skate tonight and in dress rehearsal she fell over. Did she keep upright throughout the routine? Hayley skated to Maybe This Time by Liza Minelli.

Well she didnā€™t fall over so thatā€™s good! There were a couple of stumbles there but overall she did a great skate with plenty of spins.

Hayley was awarded 31.5 out of 40 from the judges.

Robin said that when it worked it worked really well but told her that her performance didnā€™t fit the song. Jason said Hayley was clearly vulnerable without Dan but told her she lacked the determination. Ashley said Hayley is a natural performer and told her she did well. Karen said she agreed with most of the comments from the judges but told her it was a good performance.

Beth Tweddle was the next to skate tonight and she was left hanging at the bottom of the leaderboard last week. She made it through on the public vote but her training video showed that she was struggling with illness which was making her emotional. During dress rehearsal for her solo skate she fell over and got upset as she battled with trying to crack on despite being unwell. First up though tonight was her skate with partner Lukasz Rozycki and they performed to Ellie Gouldingā€™s Burn.

Beth looked on fine form to us tonight. If sheā€™s still sick then we couldnā€™t tell. We just hope the judges give her a bit of a break for once.

Beth and Lukasz were awarded 33.0 out of 40 from the judges.

Karen said Beth had to get through the evening after a bad week but told her the performance was lacking. Ashley agreed with Karen and commended Beth for pushing herself every week. Jason said Beth was a solid contender and wished Beth well. Robin called the routine slightly cautious and claimed that he couldnā€™t tell that she wasnā€™t well.

Sam Attwater had a lot to prove tonight after getting through on the public vote last week following a rocky few weeks. His first skate tonight was his solo skate which gave him the chance to show what he can really do on the ice without his partner Vicky Ogden. Last week Sam stepped up his game and wowed the judges after having a very mixed series so far. In his intro VT Sam said he was determined to get a 10. Sam skated to Still Got The Blues by Gary Moore.

That was a very confident skate from Sam tonight and he certainly did better than Hayley. Could he get that elusive 10?

Sam was awarded 36.5 out of 40 from the judges.

Ashley said she could tell how passionate Sam was about the competition. Jason told Sam heā€™s improving and pulling everything together. Robin told Sam that he owned the space tonight but warned him about his top line. Karen told Sam that heā€™s on a roll following last weekā€™s boost of confidence.

The fifth performance tonight came from leaderboard hogger Ray Quinn. For his first skate tonight Ray performed with his partner Maria Filippov. Last week he scored a perfect 40 for the second time this series. During training Ray said it was hard to keep impressing once heā€™d achieved full marks. He admitted that he needs to do things heā€™s never done before to ensure he stays at the top of the leaderboard. Ray and Maria skated to One Republicā€™s Counting Stars.

Thereā€™s literally nothing Ray canā€™t do is there? The rest of the couples may as well go home as we think heā€™s the champion of this series.

Ray and Maria were awarded 39.5 out of 40 from the judges.

Jason said that Rayā€™s performance wasnā€™t perfect citing synchronicity issues as the reason he gave a 9.5. Ashley said she could watch Ray all night long. Karen agreed with Jason that there were little things that were wrong but told him the performance was great. Robin said Ray pulled off a difficult performance and ā€˜lived at that momentā€™ (whatever that means!)

Time for the second skates of the evening. First back onto the ice was Kyran Bracken for his solo skate to Bruce Springsteenā€™s Dancing in the Dark.

That looked a little bit on the safe side to us and we didnā€™t think Kyran was as strong as Sam. Some nice tricks though!

Kyran was awarded 36.5 out of 40 from the judges.

Robin told Kyran he gave a solid performance. Jason said Kyran is a great, strong skater but told him his upper body lets him down. Karen said that Kyran performed with confidence and commended the content in the routine.

Hayley Tamaddon returned to the ice next with her partner Dan Whiston for their couples skate. They performed to Gloria Estefanā€™s Conga.

Now that was more like the Hayley weā€™re used to seeing. A confident and energetic skate that was definitely amongst her best performances this series.

Hayley and Dan were awarded 39.0 out of 40 from the judges.

Two tens for Hayley! Ashley said she was feeling it. Jason said Hayley and Dan are an incredible partnership and hit every beat. Karen said itā€™s all about the confidence telling her the routine was sharp. Robin said all Hayley needs is to be natural when she performs and it pays off.

Beth Tweddle was the next celebrity back on the ice and this time it was her solo skate. She skated to Shania Twainā€™s Man I Feel Like A Woman.

Great skate from Beth! She gave it her all and really did her best to hide her illness. We applaud you Beth!

Beth was awarded 32.0 out of 40 from the judges.

Karen said there was a lot of content in the routine telling Beth she skated the best she could. Jason said it was tough as itā€™s clear Bethā€™s not on form and told her it lacked sensuality. Ashley said she wanted Beth to let loose but told her it was too placed. Robin said he thought that the first mistake would ruin the routine but told Beth she pulled it back.

Sam Attwater was next back on the ice for his couples skate with partner Vicky Ogden. The couple skated to All Of Me by John Legend.

A beautiful skate there from Sam and Vicky. They did really well tonight and Sam has definitely had a good evening.

Sam and Vicky were awarded 38.0 out of 40 from the judges.

Ashley said that she feels Sam and Vicky get lost in each other which is beautiful. Jason said the performance was beautiful but told them he didnā€™t get goosebumps. Robin said that technically the performance was exquisite. Karen said it was stunning and believable.

The last celebrity to return to the ice tonight was Ray Quinn for his solo skate. We reckon heā€™ll get 40 (or close). Ray skated to Kiss by Prince.

Wow! What a performance and we don’t know about you but we blushed with all that grinding. Ray’s pretty much walked this competition hasn’t he?

Ray was awarded 40 out of 40 from the judges.

Robin said Ray was spectacular and asked for the sprinklers to be turned on due to the heat of the performance. Jason said he wouldnā€™t mind a bit of extra time with Ray and told him heā€™s in awe of him. Ashley said Ray owned the movement and she enjoyed it.

The leaderboard for the evening was:

Ray Quinn and Maria Filippov ā€“ 79.5
Sam Attwater and Vicky Ogden ā€“ 74.5
Hayley Tamaddon and Dan Whiston ā€“ 70.5
Kyran Bracken and Nina Ulanova ā€“ 70.5
Beth Tweddle and Lukasz Rozycki ā€“ 65.0

Tune into the results show tonight at 8.30pm to find out which couple will be leaving the competition. Weā€™re biting our fingernails already.
