Classic Thunderbirds to return in new episodes

Classic episodes of Thunderbirds are to be created thanks to a Kickstarter initiative funded by the series’ most devoted fans.

Gerry Anderson’s famous puppet show is to be recreated using traditional techniques and model effects, with original 1960s audio recordings as the basis for the soundtrack.

Leading the project is Stephen La Rivière, author of the critically acclaimed Filmed in Supermarionation book and documentary.  Original Thunderbirds director David Elliott is also returning to direct, along with many other principal members of the original production team.

Celebrating Thunderbirds’ 50th anniversary, the unique episodes are supported by Sylvia Anderson, who said: “Recreating the 1960s version of Thunderbirds is a great idea. What better way to celebrate half a century? I know that Stephen and his team will produce an episode that will look like something we would have made. FAB!”

Jamie Anderson, Gerry’s son, adds: “Generations of kids and adults have enjoyed Thunderbirds since it first aired fifty years ago. The magic formula of models, practical effects and puppets is very special, and I’m absolutely certain that Stephen and his team will recreate that magic.”

Supermarionation was the process which the Andersons coined for their highly technical marionette performers, utilising electronics and fine sculpting to create a new standard of television puppetry. Complimented by state-of-the-art explosive effects and futuristic vehicles, classic Thunderbirds remains a popular programme with children and adults alike.

Entertainment Focus recently reviewed the original Thunderbirds movies on Blu-Ray from Fabulous Films, which showcased the meticulous craftsmanship from the original production team in the 1960s.

To produce all three episodes a goal of £195,000 needs to be reached on Kickstarter. A host of rewards are available, ranging from books and unique DVDs and Blu-rays to original props from the show. To donate and find out more, visit Thunderbirds 1965 Kickstarter.
