Family Guy – Season 14 DVD review

Family Guy continues to be as controversial and un-PC as ever and with its 14th season (which is its 12th season in the US) the show delivered itā€™s biggest shock to date. Much of the season hangs around the death of one of the Griffins, which changes the dynamic of the show and delivers a rare emotional punch to the usually chirpy animated comedy. Who dies? Well we couldnā€™t possibly tell you, as thatā€™s all part of the surprise of course.

Family Guy ā€“ Season Fourteen features 21 episodes spread across 3 discs and delivers plenty of laughs. Some of the showā€™s detractors claim that show has gone down hill but we think itā€™s as funny as it ever was. As is to be expected every episode features bizarre cut-away sequences, lots of in-jokes and plenty of off-the-cuff remarks about todayā€™s batch of popular celebrities.

The season opens with Finders Keepers which gets things off to a hilarious start. Peter finds a treasure map on a placemat in a local restaurant and becomes convinced it actually leads to treasure. Unfortunately for Peter the rest of the town thinks the same thing and pretty soon itā€™s every man for himself. Is it all worth it? Will he find treasure? This is Family Guy so what do you think?!

Whilst the season waves goodbye to one of the Griffins it does mark the return of Cleveland Brown and his family in Heā€™s Bla-ack! Cleveland spent a few years with his own spin-off show but after that was cancelled heā€™s back to Quahog with his new family in tow. Anyone expecting plain sailing should be warned though as Lois and Clevelandā€™s wife Donna donā€™t particularly hit it off straight away.

Elsewhere in the season Quagmire meets his match when his new girlfriend turns him into a sex slave (Quagmireā€™s Quagmire), the Griffins travel to Italy after becoming bored with America (Boopa-dee Bappa-dee), Peter becomes a stay at home dad (Peter Problems), and Stewie goes on another time-travelling adventure that pays a nod to Downton Abbey.

Special features on the boxset include deleted scenes, select episode audio commentaries, an episode animatic on Christmas Guy, a Consuela mash-up and a tribute to a main character who is killed off during the season.

Family Guy ā€“ Season Fourteen isnā€™t going to convert any non-fans of the show but it will please the hordes of fans whoā€™ve stuck with the show over the years. Itā€™s as laugh out loud as any season before it and the adventures of the Griffins get more outlandish and crazy. With its colourful cast of supporting characters, the return of Cleveland and a new addition to the Griffin family, there is plenty going on to keep you entertained. Weā€™re still absolutely hooked.
