Winning Brontë musical set for West Yorkshire Playhouse

New rock-musical Wasted has been awarded the UK Musical Theatre prize by the Kevin Spacey Foundation. The winners will receive £10,000 in funding, year-round support from the foundation, and an industry mentor.

Kevin Spacey said: “I am proud that we can usher these worthy artists in as KSP Artists of Choice, to help support the development of their projects and their creative career.”

The rock-musical tells the story of Yorkshire’s Brontë siblings; Anne, Charlotte, Emily and brother Branwell, with songs inspired by the sisters. The show is set to be staged at West Yorkshire Playhouse in October, as part of the Brontë season marking the bicentenary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth.

Director Adam Lenson adds: “This is a career defining opportunity for me to be able to direct a major workshop of a stunning new British musical and to get to work closely with the writers up until and beyond that workshop. I am so grateful for this first show of support for a project that I wholeheartedly believe will go the distance and can help redefine what the British musical can be.”

Work-in-progress performances of Wasted are at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 20th – 22nd October at 7.45pm, with a 2.30pm matinee on 22nd October. To book tickets, call the Box office on 0113 213 7700 or book online at wyp.org.uk
