Shaw’s Women, directed by Robert Gillespie, is coming to the Tristan Bates Theatre 6th – 31st January 2015.
Shaw’s Women comprises two of George Bernard Shaw’s shorter plays, both on the theme of marriage and relationships, Village Wooing and How He Lied To Her Husband. Jane Nightwork Productions return to the Tristan Bates Theatre after their critically-acclaimed productions of Making Dickie Happy and Oedipus Retold.
“Marriage is popular because it combines the maximum of temptation with the maximum of opportunity,” said Bernard Shaw. Director Robert Gillespie doesn’t see it that way. “I know people who’ve tried it – marriage. And some have rushed home to mum after ten days; and some, after a ten-year sentence, have turned to crochet for excitement – or to mingling their erotic essences, secretly, with fresh bodies. 42% of marriages end in divorce… so how can that not be an interesting thing to study and wonder at…? We don’t stay together, but we still say we’ll try. Why?”
You can decide for yourself about the nature of marriage with this evening of witty, entertaining and rarely performed George Bernard Shaw shorts, which both feature memorable and strong female characters. Village Wooing, set on a cruise ship, sees a reclusive and intellectual writer meet a chatty woman determined to wear down his defences, first to conversation, and later to marriage. How He Lied To Her Husband is a comedy of class featuring a love triangle with a twist.
