Apple Pay arrives in the UK in July

Apple Pay has been available in the US since last October and it’s now finally arriving in the UK next month.

The service has experienced mixed success in the US but after the launch Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that over 1 million credit cards had been registered for the service. The UK is the first country outside of the US to get Apple Pay.

What is Apple Pay?

iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch users will be able to make purchases anywhere contactless payments are accepted. Users simply hold their iPhone near the contactless reader while keeping their finger on the Touch ID. Apple Watch users just double click the side button and hold the face up to the contactless reader to make a purchase right from their wrist.

Where can I use Apple Pay?

At launch over 250,000 locations in the UK will accept Apple Pay. In addition the Apple Store retail partners include Boots UK, BP, Costa Coffee, Dune, JD Sports, KFC UK & Ireland, Liberty, LIDL, Marks & Spencer (M&S), McDonaldā€™s UK, Nandoā€™s, New Look, Post Office, Pret A Manger, SPAR, Starbucks, SUBWAY stores, Wagamama and Waitrose. Transport for London (TFL) will also accept Apple Pay.

Apps that will accept Apple Pay in the UK, include Addison Lee, Airbnb, Argos, Booking.com, British Airways, Dominoā€™s, easyJet, Hailo, HotelTonight, hungryhouse, JD Sports, Just Eat, lastminute.com, Miss Selfridge, Ocado, Stubhub, thetrainline.com, Top 10, Topshop, Uncover, Vueling, YPlan, Zalando and Zara, among others.

It will support UK credit and debit cards from American Express, MasterCard and Visa Europe, issued by many of the UKā€™s most popular banks, including first direct, HSBC, NatWest, Nationwide Building Society, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander and Ulster Bank. It is expected that Bank of Scotland, Coutts, Halifax, Lloyds Bank, MBNA, M&S Bank and TSB Bank will all follow in the autumn.

Is Apple Pay secure?

When you add a credit or debit card to Apple Pay the actual card numbers are not stored on your device or on Apple’s servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element on your device, and each transaction is authorised with a one-time unique dynamic security code.

When does Apple Pay launch?

At the moment Apple is saying July but there isn’t a specific date confirmed yet.
