Hoover UltraMATT review

If you have a pet, especially one that sheds a lot of hair, Hoover’s UltraMatt is a great solution to keeping clean the areas your everyday vacuum cleaner cannot reach or handle.

The UltraMATT is a hand-held device that you can use alongside your standard vacuum cleaner. It is designed specifically for soft-furnishings such as beds, sofas and cushions, and shouldn’t be used on carpets or wide areas.

Whilst fabrics have an annoying habit of folding, the UltraMATT is surprisingly effective at digging out fine hairs that often stay trapped. The device uses rotating bristles that carry dust and dirt into a central bagless cylinder.

An innovation of the device is a UV-C light on the base that is activated only when the device is facing onto a surface at a flat angle; this is a safety feature to avoid damage to the eyes by accidentally looking at it. The UV-C light is there to kill bugs that are invisible to the naked eye, but which feed on skin particles in the fabric of beds and sofas. Regular use of the UltraMATT will ensure that populations are kept to a minimum.

The downsides of the device are that it needs to be plugged into the mains, which can make it difficult to get to inaccessible areas such as the back of the sofa; and that the power button is positioned close to where the thumb naturally falls, so it’s very easy to accidentally knock the device off whilst using it. It also loses efficacy as the cylinder fills, which, although is inevitable, happens quickly since the cylinder is small and dirt soon surrounds the air filters.

Overall, the UltraMatt is a great hand-held device that is extremely useful when used for the specific purpose it has been designed for.
