UE Mini Boom review

The market for portable audio is getting bigger thanks to the rising sales of smart devices such as iPhones, laptops and of course tablets. Gone are the days when the in-built speakers were enough for the consumer, now everyone wants to get the best sound possible from their devices. Ultimate Ears have just released their latest speaker, the UE Mini Boom as they throw their hat into the ring but is it any good?

The UE Mini Boom certainly lives up to its name and is a surprisingly tiny speaker. The Bluetooth-enabled speaker can be paired with any device that supports Bluetooth and can stream from up to 50 feet away. Pretty impressive right? Despite its diminutive size, the UE Mini Boom boasts fantastic audio quality from the speakers on either side of the device. The volume can be controlled either through your device or using the buttons located on the top of the speaker. We were pleasantly surprised with just how loud the device can go without losing any audio quality.

Getting set up with the UE Mini Boom is incredibly easy. As long as your deviceā€™s Bluetooth is switched on, all you need to do is press the Bluetooth button on top of the speaker to make it discoverable. Once youā€™ve done that it takes seconds to pair the device before youā€™re up and running. A free app is available for your device too offering you further information about how to get the best from the speaker as well as enabling you to pair two UE Mini Boom speakers for even better audio.

The UE Mini Boom has an aux socket on the front meaning you can plug your device directly into it if it doesnā€™t support Bluetooth. Thereā€™s also a mini-USB port so you can charge the speaker on the go by simply plugging it into your laptop. Once fully charged the speaker lasts for up to 10 hours which should be perfect for any journey or dinner-party.

Design-wise the UE Mini Boom looks great. It comes in a variety of colours so you can pick one that suits your set-up best. The speaker has a rubber casing making it durable and able to withstand the rough and tumble of being chucked in your bag so you can carry it around. The buttons on the rubber casing are clear so the speaker is definitely intuitive.

The only real complaint we have, and to be honest itā€™s not all that much of a complaint, is that it would have been nice to have some playback control on the speaker. Aside from the volume you have to go to your device to skip tracks. It would have been a nice touch to be able to do that on the speaker so itā€™s not essential to keep your device nearby at all times. Itā€™s a small thing but it could have made the UE Mini Boom even better.

Thereā€™s not all that much more to say about the UE Mini Boom to be honest. Itā€™s a simple speaker to use and it wonā€™t take long to get set-up. It does what it says on the tin and the sound quality is excellent. What more could you want from a portable Bluetooth speaker? The price is pretty reasonable too so if youā€™re looking for a perfect portable, and small, speaker than end your search here because itā€™s perfect.
