BenQ RL2755HM gaming monitor review

The BenQ RL2755HM is a 27inch monitor designed with console gaming in mind. Serious gamers should be choosy when it comes to picking out a screen that they’ll spend hours a day sat in front of. We’ve been testing out the RL2755HM to see if it’s worth considering.

First impressions out of the box is that the screen is a decent size and not too heavy if you need to move it around a lot. It’s a fairly unremarkable monitor to look at with a simple black plastic chassis. However there are a few bits of red on there to keep it from looking too plain.

The base has been carefully designed to rest a game controller or two on. It’s slanted but there’s a little rubber strip along the top. If you place an Xbox or PlayStation controller on there with the triggers hanging down the back then they sit there quite happy until you use them. This feature is very welcome and it helps keep your gaming space uncluttered when not in use.

Round the back of the monitor is a red wire clip to keep things tidy. The left side of the back also features a neat pulldown hook that is designed to rest your headset on when not in use. The screen can be tilted back and forth a little bit which is fine for most gamers. However you can’t change the height or rotation.

Input wise the RL2755HM can take two HDMI, one DVI and one VGA. This makes it possible to connect two consoles and a PC at the same time. The face buttons can be used to switch between modes with a couple of presses. It would have been nice for BenQ to include some USB ports on there too but sadly there are none present.

The screen supports full 1080p HD with a max resolution of 1920×1080. This is fine for the current generation of consoles but won’t allow you to view 4k content if your PC supports it. The screen is flicker free and has a lightning quick 1ms response time which is perfect for games. This means you can expect smooth rendering with no ghosting or smearing of the image.

As with other BenQ monitors we’ve reviewed this also features their Low Blue Light technology. This is designed cause less eye damage and replace the need for yellow tinted glasses that some gamers use. After long sessions with this monitor we can definitely say that it’s comfortable to stare at.

For gamers this screen has several built-in picture modes designed to enhance certain types of games. Here you’ll find special modes for FPS, RTS and even Fighting games. There are also modes designed for movies, photos and of course you can customise things yourself too.

The different modes definitely make a difference and make things easier to see. Something else that helps here is the Black eQualizer colour engine. This can brighten up dark scenes in games without over exposing lighter areas. Being able to spot things a tiny bit quicker in a fast-paced game can be the difference between a win or lose.

While great for all types of gaming we didn’t find it to be a great choice for normal PC use. If you do a lot of desktop use such as word processing, internet browsing or computer programming there are just better screens available for you. However this is probably to be expected as the RL2755HM is focused on gaming.

The RL2755HM does have two in-built speakers but they are only small at 2W each. They get the job done but you’ll find a much better experience going for a decent headset or external speaker.

Overall the BenQ RL2755HM is a solid choice for gamers who spend the majority of their time on consoles or PC games. If you don’t have a lot of space the ability to hook everything up to the one screen without needing to switch cables is useful. If you don’t have the budget for the more expensive monitors then this is definitely one worth considering.
