Fyfe Dangerfield – Thursday 21st January - London Scala

fyfe dangerfieldFyfe Dangerfield is probably better known for being the front man and founder of indie rock band Guillemots. A band who is quite famous for choosing quirky musical instruments over the more traditional type. Following two successful albums with Guillemots Dangerfield is now releasing his solo album Fly Yellow Moon. EF was lucky enough to attend his last stop on the UK tour at London Scala.

First thing that amazed us last night was how mature and respectful the crowd at Scala was. Dangerfield opened the show with Livewire a stunning solo with acoustic guitar. Looking completely at ease and even goofing around made it clear that there isn’t another place Dangerfield would rather be then on stage making music.

Memorable moments of the evening included a technical problem with the loop pedal which led to a very funny 5 minutes of awkward jokes from Dangerfield ‘I bet this is great for the reviewers’ (and there I thought we went unnoticed).

Musically there was plenty to enjoy like the breathtaking performance of Faster Then A Setting Sun and medieval sounding Firebird. We were stunned by how cool a cover of Call The Shots (Girls Aloud) sounded and Barricades got us all warm and fuzzy inside.

Dangerfield also performed his current single She Needs Me adding jokingly: ‘Fyfe Dangerfield’s single that made the top 200’.

The crowd was also lucky enough to get a spontaneous ‘Unofficial Song’ made right on the spot and still we couldn’t get enough. The evening had to come to an end though and Fyfe Dangerfield performed Made Up Love Song #43 by the Guillemots on a banjo to which he got a thunder of applauds!

We are unanimous in thinking that the gig was a success and that Fyfe Dangerfield needs little to wow a packed venue. When you go to a fair share of gigs you get used and almost expect things to get loud and messy but Fyfe Dangerfield our modern music geek had an absolutely packed venue wrapped around his little finger and pulled off a performance by himself that most rock gods could only dream of.
