Young Guns cap off a phonemal twelve months with the release of new album All Our Kings Are Dead. Having completed a UK Tour, and support slots for Bon Jovi on their recent tour, the band are hitting the festival circuit with a vengeance and will be at Guilfest, Reading and the Hevy Music Festival in Folkstone.
Their debut album has been a cathartic experience for them as lead singer Gustav Wood explains, "This album as a whole, is, by some subconscious act, a document of both where I am at this point in my life, the experiences I've had on my journey to where I am and who I am today, and the lessons I've learned."
And so to the album. From the opening track right through to the closer, this album really grabs you by the throat. Opener Sons Of Apathy derives the album's title and really drives home Wood's point about having your back against the wall. Drummer Ben Jolliff and guitarists John and Fraser Taylor beat a hectic pace through Crystal Clear and the listener is almost left exhausted by the time Meter And Verse arrives with a more melodic and catchy track. The guitars are anthemic and the Taylor boys really shine here. Weight Of The World has galloping guitars and another anthemic shout out chorus and D.O.A. is a scream out fest and Stitches opens with Wood's pleading voice and a great guitar solo.
A real standout is After The War which Wood describes as a song dealing with death. Its a melodic and anthemic piece, reminiscent of 30 Seconds To Mars.
After The War is a heavy slow burner of a song and closer Beneath The Waves finishes off the album in much the same fashion as it starts, in a blaze of glory.
This band really know how to write catchy tunes and yet still rock out with their guitars. Wood's melodic singing is a real treat and he cleverly steers away from screamo antics where other bands would easily (and lazily) defer to this method.
The band as a whole sound really tight and the guitarists John and Fraser Taylor and drummer Ben Jolliff deserve special mention for their great work propelling the bands sound for Wood to add his icing on the cake.
Its no wonder the band have been making some headwaves of late and we hope they continue their rise up the charts.
Catch the band supporting Funeral For A Friend next Friday 23rd July as well as on various festival dates.
