I Don’t Feel it Anymore (Song of the Sparrow) is the second track on Fitzsimmons’ latest album The Sparrow and the Crow. Fitzsimmons is a contemporary folk singer, whose songs are full of regret and self-examination over failed marriages and the most important relationships in his life. It features Priscilla Ahn on vocals, and she lends a soulful accompaniment to an already haunting song, as she sings the alternate verses as a feminine response to Fitzsimmons’ opening.
Heartless is a remarkable cover version of a Kanye West song that is so unlike the original as to be unrecognisable. The composition, a strong acoustic guitar with fragments of piano supporting Fitzsimmons’ fragile vocals is so evocative of the rest of his canon that it’s hard to think the song is not his own. His vocals here are as spectral and ephemerally beautiful as they are on his albums of original songs.
