If you wanted to stage a comeback you’d probably look to Take That as your guidance. The four Manchester lads pulled off an incredible one in 2006 and since then have managed to be even more successful than they were in their heyday. Comeback album Beautiful World sold over two million copies in the UK alone and spawned the monster hits Patience and Shine. In 2008 the band returned with The Circus and once again found themselves at the top spot with lead single Greatest Day. That album too went on to sell over two million copies and the band staged a massive tour off the back of it. The Circus Live was one of the most talked about tours of the year and saw Take That performing at sold-out stadiums across the UK. The Circus Live has been released on DVD and limited edition double CD.
The DVD is a 2-disc affair containing the full-length Circus performance on one disc and an In Session At Abbey Road performance on the other. Firstly The Circus Live shows how much Take That has grown as a band. Singing completely live during the course of the 2-hour, 25-song set the band sounds fantastic. Not content with letting their voices wow the audience, Take That put on a show that can only be described as spectacular. With circus acts, clown costumes, a giant elephant and dance routines, the four lads put most other pop acts to shame.
Opening with Greatest Day, the concert whizzes by as Take That sing hits old and new. Highlights across the set are the fantastic Shine, Jason’s solo on Wooden Boat and the Clown Medley which sees the band donning clown make-up and costumes as well as riding unicycles. The set’s best moment is the always fantastic Relight My Fire which features a very freaky circus master in the centre of Wembley Stadium.
The second DVD features an 11-track set from In Session At Abbey Road. Taking the setlist mainly from The Circus, the set opens with The Garden and sees the band in a more stripped-back setting. Here their vocals do all of the talking as they sing note-for-note perfect renditions of songs such as Shine, Greatest Day, Up All Night and Rule The World.
The Circus Live is a truly thrilling 2 hours and one of the best live concerts we’ve seen in 2009. Take That still has what it takes and we eagerly await their next album. As live performers they are masters of their craft and they certainly know how to thrill the socks off their audience. This DVD is a must-have for all fans of the band and would make an ideal stocking filler this Christmas.
