Seth Lakeman is one of the UK’s leading folk artists. In 2005 he was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for his second album Kitty Jay. Having found some commercial success, Lakeman still isn’t a household name but his music has a hardcore fanbase. Just in time for Christmas Lakeman has released a live DVD, Live at the Minack, that captures a performance from the Minack Theatre in Cornwall earlier this year.
The outdoor setting is perfect for Lakeman’s blend of pop, rock and folk. Over the 80 minute set, Lakeman sings 19 songs from his back catalogue. Opening with The Storm from his Kitty Jay album, he quickly establishes himself as a superb live performer and the audience is captivated from the outset. Equally comfortable performing solo or with a band, Lakeman offers a varied and interesting set. Lady of the Sea is one of the many highlights as he performs playing only the fiddle and lets his voice take centrestage. It’s not often you see a performance featuring only the fiddle so it feels fresh and exciting.
Highlights over the set include the moody How Much, up-tempo track The Colliers and the closing song Race to Be King. Lakeman performs with so much energy and his voice is strong and clear live. He’s one of those artists that sounds even better live than he does on record and he’s a real joy to watch.
Bonus features on the release include behind-the-scenes footage and two music videos (King and Country and Lady of the Sea).
Live at the Minack is a portrait of an artist in his element. Lakeman clearly enjoys performing live and the big smile that takes over his face throughout this performance is a joy to see. His music is something very different to what is in the mainstream charts and he is a truly talented musician. If you’ve not discovered Lakeman yet then we recommend getting your hands on this DVD.
