Originally written by The Magnetic Fields, Peter Gabriel re-imagines their song Book Of Love with a much grander feel to it as part of his covers album Scratch My Back, the first of a two part project. The premise being that by covering some of these artists, they will in turn return the favour and cover some of his songs in an album obviously titled I'll Scratch Yours.
The original song was a rather dour affair and on this reworking, Gabriel adds a string section and accompanying female vocals. The effect is that the song now sounds almost like a soundtrack score and could easily fit into an Ennio Morricone soundtrack score.
It's a very beautifully imagined piece now but could be hard to digest for some as the string section is a litle bit heavy on this. It's a good taster for the album where Gabriel will tackle songs by Bon Iver, Radiohead, Elbow and Paul Simon to name a few.
