London based alternative rock band Japanese Voyeurs are quite easily a miss or hit. In fact you either love Romily Alice’s voice and think that her girly tones with filthy lyrics are a match made in heaven or you’ll hate it so much that you want to snatch your eyes out of their sockets and stick them into you ears to ease the pain! Luckly for this band Barfly was filled with fans on Tuesday who could not get enough of the Japanese Voyeurs. EF was there too ready to rock till the night was over!
Barfly is a good venue most of the time and a quite popular one too and Tuesday was packed with hardcore altrock fans who came to see Wounds, who were mind blowing with their full on performance, Sharks who seemed a bit out of place in this line-up with their Gaslight Anthemesque sound, not bad but completely lost on the crowd that mainly came to see headliners Japanese Voyeurs.
Japanese Voyeurs aren’t your conventional rockers it only takes a look at them to know that. Frontwoman Romily Alice looked almost angelic with her blond hair, welcoming features and that childish voice but with her were the rest of the band members who all looked the part (long hair, beards and that threatening look, you know the one) and of course the sound did too. Japanese Voyeurs kicked off strong with the material we know from their EP Sicking and Creaming. There were performances from Dumb and You’re So Cool but also their new single That Love Sound. The band seemed completely at ease on stage while performing but there wasn’t much interaction with the crowd. There was plenty of hair bouncing though and screams.
We have to admit we weren’t sure whether we would be able to take a whole set of Romily’s vocals and yet it seemed like it flew by in a heartbeat. Japanese Voyeurs are great live and this is how they shine. On the downside it seemed Barfly had trouble with their sound system that night which ruined the experience a little but overall Japanese Voyeurs did great!
