The Perils are a Brighton based band who have been getting the praises of ex The Clash Mick Jones. They headlined White Air Festival and draw it to a close on sunday.
Any other festivals you played?
Secret Garden festival, The South Sea festival and Beachdown Festival who turned into a let down…three days before it was supposed to happen it got cancelled.
There is a lot of hype about your band.
Really???
Yeah you get a lot of praises. How does it feel?
Well you tend to get good and bad reviews and usually it’s the bad ones that stick with you.
Are you more of a live band then?
Yeah definitely. Everyone who speaks to us says we are live band. Even our records are live. I don’t think you have listened to the perils until you have seen us live.
Do you have any singles out or an album?
The album was released in June. It was a DIY job. We will give you a copy with a free condom.
Oh really all the festival essentials?
Yeah there will be some toothbrushes soon and ponchos etc. (laughs) We have a single out now ‘Be Your Perils’ and its available on iTunes. The album is an accumulation of two years of writing and this is the first lot. But there is another album coming up.
Is it still DIY?
We work with producer from Transmission Records actually. He is a lovely guy who has been helping us out and recording with us. We recorded our first album in 5 days and just mixed it down. So for the next album we want to spend more time on it.
What kind of music do you listen to?
Just a little bit of everything, New York Dolls, Beatles Led Zeppelin, The Cribs, Neil Young, The Maccabees, The Clash, The Pistols, The Libertines, Kings of Leon maybe that is not a cool thing to say, and there are some Blur fans here as well.
What’s the plan for the rest of the year?
As soon as we get the van fixed we will be back on tour again. The gear box just went a few miles from Tunbridge Wells fortunately we can get it fixed and back out in time for the next tour. But I really think the next focus is on recording the second album.
Is it going to sound like the first one?
Probably not cuz the first one was recorded within five days and sounds very raw, which is what we wanted. But I think the second one is going to sound a little bit bigger hopefully. The first one was all about capturing the live element of our sound. Yeah we just wanted to sound like we had a bit of money for the second album (laughs)
What do people need to know about The Perils?
Well we are live band and we like to put up a show on for the audience. We also break a lot of equipment on the stage. Our stuff just seems to get broken!
Do you get carried away?
Probably I guess that’s why we are named The Perils. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong but at the same time we never stop even when stuff goes wrong. One of us almost fell over last night.
Do you have any anecdotes?
Danny on our first show as the perils jumped off the stage as his guitar broke and basically got knocked out for a few seconds. It was all planed obviously (laughs). I got my bass stuck on the light wires once and couldn’t play anymore but luckily it was the last song!
