Alphabeat are the ultra pop and colourful band from Denmark that got us dancing on their hit singles Fascination and 10000 Nights Of Thunder. Back in 2008 they put smiles on our faces but since then we haven’t heard much from the band. So what have they been up to? Well fear not EF found out for you when we spoke to Stine Bramsen one of the lead singers of the band.
How are you today?
I am well thank you.
Your new single 'Hole In My Heart' is out this week. Tell me about it?
It’s a song written by Sven it’s a love song and it's quite 90s house inspired.
Your videos are quite colourful and happy like your music. Do you have any input in this?
Yeah it depends sometimes we tell our management if we think we have a good idea for the vibe of the song but this time we didn’t really said much to them cuz the people who shot the video were really good. It was a mixture of electro and futuristic.
How did you get into music?
I have always been singing and went to a tiny high school where they had musicals and choirs but I didn’t meet the boys until I went to a new school. I was 16-17. I saw an add for a band who was looking for a back-up singer and I thought well I got to sing while I’m at school cuz otherwise I’ll be too bored. So I went to the audition and then chose me. We have been together for ten years now.
So that must mean you all get along then?
Yes definitely we wouldn’t be together if we were just colleagues. We are a gang by now.
You’ve been off the British market for a while?
We toured that album for a long time. We played about 200 gigs in a year and then we spent the rest of time in the studio recording for eight, nine months.
How was it to be back in the studio after so long?
It was really nice. We needed it cuz when you are touring constantly you need to be extravert. That’s the life we’ve got, on the road then your in the studio again and then out again. It makes it all much more fun.
When did you find time to write? Did you write on the road or in the studio mainly?
Both we started writing while we were on the tour bus going to venues and waiting to do the gig. That’s changed the sound of the album as well. Normally we played the song on the guitar and then put the sound together. This time we made a song on the laptop on a programme and record it. Then we had to rehearse it and see if we could play it life.
How is the response to the new material?
It’s really good actually. As I said we didn’t really know if it would work life. It’s quite a different sound on both albums but it works well on stage.
Is the new album still going to sound like 80s electro pop or is it a completely different sound?
We kind of moved it to 90s music. We thought that there was something cool about that housy and dance genre and combined with a pop melody cuz normally these songs have a hook and we made it a little classic. We tried to mix these two genres.
Do you have any favourite songs on the album 'The Beat Is …'?
I really like Hole In My Heart actually that’s probably my favourite and then a song called Heat Wave which is fun for me to sing cuz its quite a powerful song.
Do you write at all for the band?
Well it is a challenge with the songs we all contribute a lot and chip in to finishing the songs in the studio.
You are touring with Lady Gaga this year?
Yeah we are really looking forward to that!
How did that happen? Did you meet her or was it arranged by your management company?
She mentioned us in an interview and our management thought that there might be a possibility there and contacted her people.
Is it a little bit scary?
I think its going to be a really big experience. Obviously it’s going to be arena shows and as you know she is quite extreme. We are just going to be there doing our music we are not going to have a big production on it but hopefully it will be simple and good.
Do you have any plans for your own headline tour?
No not yet so much is happening right now. We are probably thinking ahead more then we can handle.
