As we mentioned in our review of Ellie Goulding's album Lights, we feel she is the real deal. All the hype and awards bestowed upon Miss Goulding really are deserved.
So with this support slot for Passion Pit, Ellie Goulding takes a backseat for a change. Dressed in some black lacy singlet and denim hot pants, Miss Goulding isn't going to win any fashion awards but that aside, she launches effortlessly into Lights, the track the album is named after but doesn't actually contain said track. The crowd has swelled to capacity after earlier support act Little Death left the stage which was probably to a lot of people's relief as their sound mix was terrible. Not so with Ellie Goulding's set. with a floor tom by her side, she happily wields a set of drumsticks to beat in time with her drummer. We wonder if Florence Welch should donate her Drumming Song to Ellie.
Her voice is clear and very strong. Certainly showing us all why she won the Critics Choice Award at The Brits. The slow burner This Love is another song that shows off her voice so beautifully. The crowd are all behind her. She doesn't seem to put a foot wrong tonight with The Writer, Salt Skin and Guns And Horses all delivered perfectly. There is one funny moment when, as she puts her mic on the stand to drum away, the mic slips down forcing her roadie to rush out and re-adjust it and Goulding giggles away afterwards apologising and stating she wasn't expecting her mic to droop that low. Finishing with her new single Starry Eyed, Ellie Goulding certainly could have headlined tonight and the crowd seem to dissipate as she leaves the stage.
She's definitely a star on the rise and will be playing a sold out show at Heaven on 28th April. Let's hope she starts to fill some much bigger venues than that.
