Dolly Parton is still one of the world’s most successful country singers. Having released 58 studio albums over her 51-year career, Parton has amassed an army of fans across the world. Also known as an actress, Parton has turned herself into an inspirational business woman over the years and is renowned for her self-deprecating humour. In 2008 Parton hit the road in support of her latest studio album Backwoods Barbie and played 17 dates in Europe. Now the tour is being released on a CD/DVD package and features 15 tracks from the acclaimed shows.
Opening with Two Doors Down, a hit for Parton in 1978, the show opens with a bang. Despite being in her sixties, Parton can still work a stage and entertain a sold-out crowd with the enthusiasm, energy and passion of a woman much young. Clad in a figure-hugging dress that showcases her larger-than-life boobs and tiny waist, Parton works the stage with incredible charm. In between songs she connects with the audience as she tells stories about her family and her life and mocks herself along the way. Few artists take the time to speak to the audience these days so it’s remarkable to see a performer like Parton being so open and warm with her fans. Her stories are part of her charm and one particular recollection sees her recall the day she told her mother she wanted to become trash. It’s stories like this that make it impossible to dislike Dolly.
Highlights across the 75 minute set include the working girl anthem 9 To 5, the warning words of Jolene and the folksy Coat Of Many Colours. Parton’s energy shines throughout every track and she proves herself to be a dab hand on musical instruments too. The performance ends with the world-famous I Will Always Love You before Parton returns to the stage for an encore performance of Jesus and Gravity.
